    su carbies

I changes my carbies from strongbergs to su's. they worked for a while then started the flooding and black smoke syndrome. I can only thing off flooding due to punctured float or stuck needle valve on open position. Anybody have any ideas it would be much appreciated.

Possibly a sunken float, not uncommon. Also, as you have thought the fuel needs to be clean as it enters the float chamber to avoid the needle getting stuck open with 'bits'.

They are a great conversion with lots of jets etc available, stick with it.

what engine? They work well on a high comp 4.6

    what model su?

oil in the dashpots, no more than 3-4psi fuel pressure and regular fuel filter changes seem to be the way to keep them reliable.

i have HIF6 units on my drive vehicle and strombergs on my parts vehicle and the su's are a quantitative upgrade...

From memory, there are only four jets, but dozens and dozens of needles. I could dig out the books to confirm this if necessary.

Correct Brian, should've been more specific. Yes needle profiles are almost endless, whereas the actual jet sizes are not required to be as plentiful.

engine is 4.6 with 3.5 litre heads which i belive doesnt help. when i just put the su's on they worked! now dont. Ive got duel fuel set up as i put switch into neutral position the car runs intill runs out of petrol. on petrol setting it smokes. Ill put fuel reg and see what the pump is pushing( it was changed six months ago) but i really think its needle perhaps stuck open or float!! see how i go.

is there a way to check stuck open needle valve from outside carb? take fuel line off and check if needle is moving i suppose. if it is on both carbs then it must be fuel float on one of them i suppose.
