    Dash out...fun times! Burnt switches

So I finally took the plunge and gutted the dash.
Found the leak in the heater, the bottom hose tail had cracked 75% of the way around and snapped right off while getting the hose out. I've ordered a new copper cored heater unit to replace the plastic and aluminium one and a new set of hoses for good measure.
While I'm in there I'm going to get the aircon fixed up with new hoses and tx valve and whatever else the guys at Natrad think. I want the A/C to be as reliable as possible. My wife's 11year old Pulsar has super aircon and has never been touched! Why can't the Brits match the Japs...???

What I found inside wasn't good. the fan speed switch has been cooking. I am sure other have found this too, what did you do about it and is there a way to prevent it from happening again?

    Look familiar???
This is why I want to spend the dollars getting the air and heat right, I don't ever want to see this again!!!

Replaced the fan switch on my 94 Vogue LSE some time back. Clearly not a reliable component. No sign of melt-down however.

Poor earthing usually causes thes kinds of melting episodes,

I sympathise; When I pulled the V8 out of the LSE to fit the Tdi, the engine suddenly tilted back a little too far due to an equipment malfunction, snapping off one of the plastic heater tubes. It now has a new heater, a brass one.

    found one

Just rang around and it gets worse. $130 odd from All fourx4 at Kotara.
With a little bit of searching though, I have ordered one from britishparts.co.uk for 22 pounds plus postage (to be advised). Even if postage is another 20 pounds (unlikely) that still equates to only about $60 according to xe.com currency converter. Less than half the price of a locally sourced unit.

    Lucas strikes again ?

Who was the skin-flint manufacturer who made the original switch ?

    - Never lost a switch in any of my Jap vehicles. Seems the Rover fan switch is regarded by them as a 'consumable item'.

I've heard that LUCAS is teddibly sensitive to criticism and allegations of substandard design and workmanship with el-cheapo materials.

If this is a Lucas made unit, then I have NO sympathy for them.
    - If someone else made it... then indeed we'd all like to know!

Given the time, I'd prefer to salvage something from a Jap wreck that could be made to fit the dash... - And tell Lucas - and the world - what you did and why...

Incidently, congratulations on your bravery in gutting your Rangie...and putting it back together...

If I ever take off the heater hoses from the bulkhead, I ALWAYS run a box cutter along them and cut them off rather than twist the hoses, as it is a common problem to crack the stubs on the plastic heaters.

    So far so good.
