Thermostat

G'day
I'm a long time owner of RRC's and changing the Thermostat on a '93.

The new 88c thermost has approx 5mm by-pass hole at the top with the small plastic ball to stop the flow.

The existing 88c has no plastic ball and the hole is only about 3mm...Ball may have disappeared at sometime in the past or thrown away....

Years ago I recall someone somewhere in a forum advocating removing the ball prior to installing the new Thermostat and also drilling the hole a couple of mm larger.

Is this a valid sensible tip or not?

The ball thingy helps you bleed the air out of the system. Most later engines (like yours) have a separate bleed hose connected from the top of the thermostat area to the drivers side of the radiator (via the throttle body). This is the best system, makes removing the ball irrelevant.

Nah.....mine hasn't got the bleed hose and because the vehicle is now in bits until I fit the thermostat etc I have to push on with what I got.

So if I understand you correctly you're advocating removal of the ball?

You sure the '93 doesn't have it? No matter, take out the ball and it will just be slightly slower to heat up in the winter.

Yep....there is nothing from the thermostat housing other than the top radiator hose connection.

I dropped one of the studs down into the 'Black hole' where tools, studs, washers and screws go to frustrate us.

I can see it so in the morning one of my sons is bringing around one of those strong magnets on the flexible cable that's made to fish things out of such spots, I had decided that I would remove the ball so all should be good to go then I need to refill and get the air out.

Of course you are looking at the thermostat housing outlet. I mean from the manifold directly behind the thermostat. Has a small hose going to the inlet manifold, then to the radiator.

OK I can see where you mean...would have been easier if I had enough grey matter to have looked at the radiator end

That will make it easier to get the air out.
