Interesting site - whole car from $2000, so for a 4WD, I would imagine close to double this, which is still not too bad UNTIL you discover that the wrap will only last for 3 to 5 years...:o

That's around $1000 a year, so going by that, spending 6 to 8K on a full respray that will last 4 or 5 times longer is better value.

Having said that, you can get anything you like printed on the wrap, so you could do a really cool design, or something really out there, and still take it back to the original colour and condition if you wanted to, or needed to sell.

i was quoted aprox $15,000 to respray my 4 door and to cut costs i said i will remove trim, pannels, glass and so on, sheesh i wouldnt what to take it off road after that. that was not a typo it was a starting price of $15k with a minimum of 6 months to have her and i took all the door trim and so forth off

Geez, you need to shop around...:p. Or was this for a show quality finish? And 6 months? What was that all about? Sounds like they didn't want the job, or were just going to do it after hours for some extra cash...:p

Generally as soon as you take in something ally the $$$ go up. Didn't even cost 10% of that for all the carbon work I had done either.

DIY... for under $500

• Aprox 10 sheets of 180g wet rub sand paper
• Aprox 10 sheets of 400g wet rub sand paper
• Approx 10 sheets of 800g wet rub sand paper
• 4l Acrylic automotive primer
• 4l Acrylic automotive solid colour
• 5 tolls of 25mm masking tape
• 2 roll of 2inch masking tape
• 3-4 newspapers
• Spray gun with 1.4-1.6mm tip
• 20l general purpose or acrylic thinners
• ½ sand paper sheet sized rubbing block
• 4l prepwash-prepsol-wax & grease remover
• Minimum 50lt 2.5hp air compressor
• can of flat black

I'll let you know how my respray and striping goes on my RR90 CLassic - respraying the original trocadero red but putting some Black striping inspired by 67 RS Camaro-like front bonnet stripes (horizontal), matt black (not doing 2-pac, but plan on buffing cut and polish to get shine).

Make sure you get some good before anf after shots! You know the :rulez: :D:p

4 ltrs of primer and colour may get you over the line with a respray the same colour as you are doing, but you would need twice that for a proper complete colour change.

Did my POS like this ^^^. Cost is about right. May want to include some spray putty if you are after 'perfection'.

Acrylic dries very fast and can be rubbed back if you get runs for example. Contains a lot of lead solids, so use appropriate PPE.

The 81 body I put on mine was red and originally acrylic, so it was resprayed in the same colour because I didn't want the inevitable scratches being too obvious. Used about 2.5 L of red.

Mine also got 5 coats of clear (about 3 L) over the top to stop the red from fading and allow a light rub back with 1200 before cutting. (if you want it shiny.......... at the start :D )

What about after your base coats starting to dilute the color out into the clear? I did this on a respray a while back and while it ended up with shine it also had some depth as I layered it about 10:1 (paint/clear), to 1:10 over about 10 layers. Still needed a buff but was very smooth and shiny.

I just wanted it matching red, no fading, and a bit of 'flexibility' later on, i.e. being able to cut minor scratches out if I felt like it.

Also I didn't have room in the shed to be able to do a whole coat over the POS at one time so getting technical was going to be a bit hard. Like the idea though and might use it in future.

I think the main point is that acrylic is ideal for beginners because you don't need a booth and mistakes are easy to fix. Touch ups are easy too.

Used acrylics in the surfboard industry for 25 yrs, so was familiar with all aspects.

Oh, I can do it for much less than $3K. Just need to clean my brush and roller first :D:D:D.

But seriosly, why dont you learn to spraypain, and practce on old stuff from tip till you are good enough.
