    gearbox noises

    Hi guys,
    I've got 4.2L, R380 and LT230.

Last year: Transfer was rebuilt & gear was cross drilled, gearbox was inspected and new main shaft installed.

I've been driving the car for a while now since the efi conversion and its developed a noise when you can gears (sometimes).

its only on the up shift and only if the revs are up. Its sounds like a somethings not fully engaging/meshing.
If i shift and wait a while to engage next gear it rarely does it. but a normal shift will often 'grind' especially in the lower gears.

its not the driver as I've had several people driver it and it happens to them and I've made sure the clutch pedal is fully press (it does have a high friction point to)

anyone got any ideas before i take it into the shop

Castrol VMX-80 or transmax M (i think) i did it a fair while ago (Easter last year). hadn't driven the car for a long time since doing it

I looked around the forums might change to Castrol Syntrans 75/85

I find it weird that its only just started doing it though...

one of my mates who's driven the car who's a mechanic

thinks it could be the sycros.
He said its highly unlikely but it sounds like the clutch plate is somehow spinning backwards, by the kind of the noise its making.

I'm changing the oil this weekend, hopefully thats it.

If delaying the gearchanges helps, then try the different oil first. Oil can have a big bearing on the synchro operation.

I've never heard of a clutch plate spinning backwards. I think Dave's been around the modern stuff too long .

Pretty sure it was transmax M in it.

Emptied it, then got very sick for the rest of the weekend, hopefully I'll get the syntrans in tonight.

With these noises is it likely to have caused damage?

    Hi BrendOn,
I would go for oil first as Scouse mentions, also check the transfer case oil, you never know. If oil stands for a significant length of time this can have a minor effect on the viscosity. Oils a cheap fix if that is what it is. As a long shot could be the springs in the pressure plate loose, maybe, thats a long shot, this can happen if you use none OEM pressure plates, if that is the case the vehicle can run like that for ages. Spinning backwards, I'm not there, I assume this is someone just trying to define the noise rather than a real situation.
