I am about to embark on a transmission & transfer case swap on my 1990 RR; already have the transfer out as I needed a couple of bits for my other one and I'm putting the LT230 in it. Going to swap the tired ZF for a reco one I have lying around. As I have tentative plans for an engine swap as well, I'm wondering if it's feasible to take the whole lot out through the front, and put the engine, transmission and transfer back in already bolted together. I have all the gear i should need to do this, just wondering if anyone here has done this and if it should come out okay that way.
Ditto this, you will also need to play around with hoist chain location to make sliding the whole unit in a bit easier, the t/c will try to pull off to one side but that can be remedied with a trolley jack once it's half way in.
It can be a fiddle, and definitely a job to be done by a min of 2 people. The more the merrier!![]()
Thanks guys, I have done this job on other vehicles including Jap 4wds, just wasn't sure whether it was achievable on the Rangie. Thanks BU for the tip about the rad panel.
The transfer is out and a reco LT230 waiting to go in, the auto sticks in first when cold and I have a reco ZF ready to go in, but the engine that will go in has been sitting for a couple of years so i think I'll take the heads off and check everything over before doing the swap. I really didn't want to wrestle the auto out and replace it only to do the motor swap soon after. I think I'll have to get the LT230 into it for now, as I need the car going, then take the whole lot out and swap the auto at the same time as the motor, when I have it ready to go in. This sort of thing is taking up WAY too much of my life at present esp with other projects around the property half done.
