    3.9 not starting when cold

    Hi Guys,

Same Rangie, got to the end of the running issues but still have an issue with cold starting.

If it has not been run for a couple of hours, it can take up to 3 mins of cranking for it to start and then runs like crap for a few seconds and then if perfect.

After that, it starts after about 1 1/2 cranks.

I've just changed the coil, ign module, dizzy cap, adjusted the MAF and throttle body and TPS to spec and set the timing to 10deg (running better than at 9deg).

I will go and have a look at it again when I can and measure voltage drop at the coil when cranking but he has this problem at 6am leaving for work and lives 45min from me so I'm not going there to check it then.

I't does start rough when I first get there but I was associating that with the rest of it's problems which it seems is not the case as it runs as good if not better now than most Rangies/Disco's that I've driven.

    Cheers Casper.

Never start the motor with continual cranking

Try turning the ignition ON ... wait 3secs,then turn the motor over for 1 revolution ..IE Flick the key

    Turn it OFF

Now turn the key back on ...Wait 1 second .... Now turn it over for 2 seconds ...

Cycle the motor to start // Not wind it over till she fires

    Cheers
    Mike

A quick elimination - check the resistance of both the coolant temperature sensor (top front nearside on the inlet manifold) and the fuel temp sender (on the fuel rail)
With a cold motor ie temp between 0c and 20c should get a reading between 2400>5900 ohms. When warm it'll drop to 300>500 ohms ish.

The CTS tells the ECU to lengthen the injector interval when cold - similiar to pulling out the choke. So if the multimeter reads high ohms = lots of juice; low ohms = no enrichment.

    cheers

    having similar problems.
    disco starting/earth

i have to crank sometime almost till it has no battery and sometimes i have to move the throttle.if i adjust the AFM it starts first hit but misfires on the road.

not thought about the fuel temp as it doesnt do much on other brands and is mostly used for hot starting.
