    Were should I start 3.5l

Hey guys been having some issues with my rangie for a while was missing running rich got that sorted. Has had noisy lifters since I got it didn't worry me cause have been slowly been doing it up. Anyway checked to see if I was getting any oil up top and found the worst case of carbon build up I've ever seen. The oil is only just getting through to the rockers just very slowly oozing out everything else is dry. Just wondering were I should start ?? I would post pics but only have phone at the moment.

Don't want to see pics anyway if it is that horrific!

I'm afraid the only way to fix that problem is a proper full overhaul.

At least it'll be a great result! Some hi comp pistons and a set of appropriate carb needles and what a beautiful thing

You can easily do the cam, lifters, timing chain, rings and big end bearings in the vehicle. As a bare minimum take off the rocker gear and covers, degrease thoroughy, blow out the oil feeds, oil thoroughly and refit. Then take off the sump, clean out the slime and grot and refill with decent quality oil, such as Penrite HPR30. You should get some more life out of it so long as the oil pressure is adequate. If your oil pressure is still low, replacing the oil pump gears or refacing the pump cover isn't hard, just use a new correct thickness pump gasket.

If the bill for parts is looking like going over budget, put out the word that you are looking for a working 3.5. There's a few out there, victims of power hungry landy owners.

Just had my 3.5 re-built. Now that it's done, people are telling me there are heaps of going 3.9's out there, cheap.
Get one of those and do an engine swap. At least, that is what people are telling me I should have done.

Thanks for the advice guys really appreciate it. I'll most likely start pulling it apart and go from there may be cheaper to do a straight swap for an other 3.5 or 3.9 but if I rebuild mine I know what's been done. Mick-marsh if you don't mind me asking what did the 3.5 rebuild set you back?

    G`day ,

if it`s as dirty as you suggest , meaning it`s an honest probably untouch 3.5 , i`d suggest the best plan would be to leave it as it is .

Find something suitable in the mean time but it may only rattle away for another 10 yrs as it is .

They don`t have alot of oil up top at the best of times and as long as the moving internal bits have oil , it doesn`t really matter if the outside bits don`t .

You don`t want carbon making it`s way around inside with the possibility of blocking gallerys ETC and this can happen if things are disturbed .

The reason it rattles will most likely be because the camshaft and lifters are worn out and if you found some carbon under the rocker covers , if you ever have the timing cover off , you will be surprised at how much carbon and muck can be found there , in an honest old 3.5 .
