    Cooling system switches

    Hi guys.

I've got a twin thermo fan set up with a Davies Craig thermostatic switch which has only intermittently worked. It's given up the ghost again (installed for less then 9 months...) so i'm not happy with it

I'd like to know what these switches are on the inlet manifold.

the red circle is for the temp gauge. whats the blue circle for?

on my on there is only a earth wire of it (attached to the water pump).

does anyone know what this switch is for and or what temperature it activates.

it's hard to see on that pic of yours,
the red cirle looks to be the switch on the thermostat housing yes?
If so that switch will kick in the thermo fans on the aircon condensor, to assist when engine is running to hot , i think it activates when 105 deg C is reached,
I have heard you can fit a lower temp switch there and run your radiator thermo's off it.

The engine temp sensor screws into the front of the inlet manifold,
there is also another larger temp sensor for the ecu (fuel mixture) at the front of the manifold, it has an injector type plug on it.
    hope this helps

its not a great photo but the best i could find on the net.
    cheers

hmmm i think mines wired up wrong then (its an efi conversion on a carby motor) the one that's closer to the thermostat housing (red circle) is wired the temp gauge and the large switch near the base is for the aircon fans then?

I haven't seen on for the ecu (flapper style) but there is probably on there, as it works fine (and took a lot to get running)

Are you sure the factory temp senders have anything to do with your thermofan setup? If it's using a davies craig thermostatic switch then it probably has a probe in the radiator core or in the top hose.

Trace the wiring and see where it ends up....

I installed the switch it runs a probe in the top hose. I have hoping to get rid of this switch as run the factory ones as its giving me grief.

I have an LED hooked up to the switch (on when fans are on) and have noticed the LED dimmly lights up when the fans should come on but the fans don't. then when i switch it to constant on (they work) and back to thermatic switch the LED goes out

You could also buy a fan controller from flex-a-lite or derale. They will vary the speed of the fan from 60% to 100% according to temp.

Or you can wire them up with relays to do 50% and 100% which is also a good idea (I did that.. with switches in the rad)

    Lots of options!
