If you are doing the lifters i would do the cam.
You are going to get a significant amount of wear in a short period of time if you only do the lifters.
Keep the cam std or go for a towing cam, ie more torque down low.
Take a good look at the rocker gear/pushrods as well.

I did or had done 3 4.6 engines from TRS.

The first one was standard cam and last two were what they call a towing grind.
Made a huge difference as there was a lot of torque right down low and as I lived in the hills, made perfect sense. The auto box also seems to like it.

    Good mornin all,
ok, found out more info, the eingine is only 15k old. So weird that a lifter went. I've pulled it down, cam is perfect on all lobes. The lifter at faultis worn on the face. You can see the carved out bit. I've replaced ALL the lifters. It does look brand new in there. No sludge, no burnt oil marks, nothing!.
I dont have the time to bang out (nor the cash) the cam. If I have to to the job twice... at least ive had practise!
Next time I will do the cam/lifters/ stage 1 cam in.
Well, I will finish it off tonight so I'll let you know what was the outcome.

When I was getting some parts for my 4.0 engine swap I wanted a towing cam but was told that the engine computer would compensate for the cam changes and deliver the same net result.

I ended up getting a new standard cam but after reading this post I couldve got the other cam.

Im running a heatseeker cam in my 4.6 RRC. I cant remember the exact specs but coupled with the Wolf ECU setup im running it makes fantatic power and torque between 2 and 4krpm. Normal driving with the slushbox doing its thing ti rarely see more than 2800rpm and acceleration is very strong and smooth.

As mentioned to the 3.9 hot wire system will accomodate a cam change but the Gems and Bosch systems used in the later Rangies with negate any advantage from running a cam.

    OK,
we are now all quiet on the rangir front! Whilst talking to my mate who works at Repco he told me that the lifters are the same as a holden V6!! AND a whole lot more cars but I csnt remember the other ones.
It is now puring like a dream. The onlt problem now is the engine is sooo quiet the drivetrain is bloody loud! hehe
Just so if anyone is doing this crank engine with no coil a couple of times 4-7 times. Then coil on, run it for abour 30 seconds, turn off, wait 20 seconds and repeat until all quiet.n They will get quieter and quieter. It does sound awful when you first start it.
Whilst I was at it cleaned up all the wiring.

Hope you didnt use holden lifters...the ones with the holes in them...
the V6 ones may be different but the earllier ones use to bleed down at constant high rpm
well thats what I was told by many years ago.

not sure. I have noticed now that there is one lil bugger which is still on the noise side. I gave the engine a internal flush and put new oil 15w50 /filter and soo far all good. There is a little bit of lifter noise for about 1/2 a second and then quiet. I'll see how it goes for a while. WHen I'm bored I'll probably put in a stage 1 cam in it.
