Repair of the retainer plastic clip is detailed in this thread:

PhilipA, your picture shows the factory design plastic clip fitted to the top of the shaft, there is no rivet present. A screw in there shows the dissy was repaired by someone smarter than Mr. Lucas.

    Hi Bee utey,
Is there any other reason to secure the outershaft as you have proposed other than to avoid dissrupting the weights when extracting the rotor button. That is, in regard to the actual operation of the distributor?

None at all, just makes life easier when you accidentally yank on the rotor.

So the "Tune-up machine" didnt pick what up ? You say you have done something with the valves (usually means heads off),cam, lifters , coil, ign module, leads, etc etc etc .which didnt fix it , and then you fit a known good Dizzy and all is well .
Whom or what is this tune-up machine so I make sure I never go anywhere near it !!!!

    Thanks Nigelbuilding 1984.
I am thinking to go and get the distributor rebuilt. Haven't finally decided on that as yet and haven't had the spare time to do any further work on it.
Will see how things pan out this week.

Have also rechecked compression and found most are about 130 psi . they range from 125-150. with the hand held gauge I assume these figures would rule out any significant valve issue?

yes, although 125 is not too flash but may just be an artifact of the inaccuracy of one of those cheapo gauges, and the difficulty of holding it in the plug hole.
