Nat

I have an 85 RRc that started life as a 3.5 carby. I went through the drama of an Alloy 5 litre built off a P76 block, a 4.4 P76 and it now has a 4.6 EFI (for the last 14 years). I also have a 1992 RRc with a 3.9 EFI and I find it far better than the original 3.5 (but not quite as good as the 4.6).

If I had started with the 3.9 I may never have gone to all the trouble of the other bigger thirstier engines. The 3.9 is a reliable engine in Rover terms and is what RR should have always had as a minimum.

I think you should drive a few other people's 3.9s and then make a decision on your needs.

The p38a 4.0 and the RRc 3.9 are essentially the same 3,946 cc engines. Which you could swap your current EFI system and re-chip.
