    Weird power problem

Hi all well I've just for myself an 83 rangie and it has a funny problem

As you look at the fuse panel the far right fuse (near guard) if that's pulled out I get fuel, temp and indicators working but no wipers or brake lights.
If fuse is in I get no temp, fuel and indicators but do get brake lights and wipers.

There is also no warning lights apart from oil and fuel and interior lights don't work

    Any ideas

    Adam

Agreed! I think you need to start here - pull every earth you can find and clean them right up.. If you have a multimeter, check the resistance of each of them back the negative terminal of the battery. Make sure the main earth between the engine & chassis isn't broken, and is clean and tight as well.

    Hi

Is this the fuse box with the 30 or 35 amp 3AG glass fuses? If so I had a 1975 model that had alsorts of weid electrical problems because of the fuse box. Believe it or not the sprung legs holding the fuses in are not connected together at each end but use the fuse to transfer power from one side to the other.

you need to make absolutely sure that each sprung leg in the fuse box is
making good contact with the fuse. Some people actually replace the fuse box with something else. I don't know if yours is like this but it took them until the Phase 11 of 1984 to put in a decent amount of fuses.

I know it's not of much help- but I had similar issues, except when I pressed my brake pedal with the lights on I would lose ignition and the car would stall. Not the ideal situation... so I ripped out every last bit of wiring and rewired the whole truck! I hate lucas.

However what I think might have happened is that the fused side of that far right hand fuse has cross shorted with the power side of the fuse which supplies power to your indicators etc. However I am probably wrong as this is lucas wiring and anything could have happened.

What you could try to do is see where you have power at the back of the fuse box with 1, 2 and 3 fuses in (and what voltage.. not just a test light). That might give you some idea which wires to trace. Unfortunately on the early rangies the loom ran behind the heaterbox and they're a right pain to check.

Alternatively, just have a look behind that fuse box from under the dash. Who knows, it might be melted! Mine was.
