Advise on 1977 (2 door) Range Rover

    Hi there all

Although not new to the Land Rover scene - as I have a huge fleet of vintage series Rovers but I have been offered a nice complete original 1977 2 door Range Rover.

I am not to sure what the attraction to it is but I am looking for a some thing different (neat tidy and sounds great).

I have been informed they will pass most things other than a fuel bowser

Question - I am after the forums advice on troublesome areas before purchasing and also what sort of dollar range as its been sitting for 10 years in a shed (although visually in good condition)

Well looking forwards to peoples advice.

    All the best

while i am in no way an expert on them, i did happen to have a short love affair with a 2 door until it died a nasty death (committed hari-kiri)

Rust. The rear top window. Rust around firewall, rust around filler neck.

Electrics. These were an awesome way to spend forever fixing, especially if its had the usual 10 sets of spotlights an accessories and what not that mine had.

Carby, mine had a holly, but i wished it had the SU's, holly doesnt like angles.

parts. they are easy to find, but GOOD parts are hard to find.

seats and seatbelts are a pain if they have been neglected.

They do go anywhere, and they are comfortable.

I originally had big plans, but after starting, i realised it was tooo much for me. I will find a bobtail oneday tho. The 3.5 sounds unreal, even if it has next to NO power. Mine broke down in some way every single time i took it out, but i always managed to get her home (including driving 3 hours thru the bush using the blinkers as headlights ), but i tend to think that was more due to the poor condition of mine and the way it was driven (in anger)

Having owned a 2 door and 2 4 door Rangies as well as series and my 110,I think the 2 door is the essence of what a Rangie should be.It just looks so much nicer than a 4 door. And the sound of a V8 Rover is pure bliss
As mentioned the main areas of problems are, rust in the upper tail gate(Stainless replacements available in the UK now,at a price).Poor electrics, particularly headlight and wiper switches and wiring. If it has a normal ketering ignition distributor, replace with an electronic distributor and coil.Common to have cooling system faults, heater cores and corrosion on hose connections around the engine, usually due to inhibitor not being routinely changed. They can suffer from excess drive line play.Normal oil leaks. The front seatbelts can give problems as the are mounted to the seats. The seats can suffer from wear in the back rest mechanism(like most 2 door vehicles)which can be reason for failure for registration. And the plastic used on the dash is prone to UV failure and just seems to fall apart if affected.

Places to check for rust including those already mentioned are the rear chassis cross member, the sills and both front footwells. The window winders can break but are readily available. I kinda miss my old 2 door. If you can find one without rust thats a great start, cause once they have it ... The doors also have a habit of rusting and finding good doors is getting harder.

Holleys suck stick to the standard carbs as mentioned. After market seats can be installed but the main trick here is fitting the new seatbelts as I believe the pillar needs to be strengthened.

The rear windows have also been made out of Aluminium - I think Maxidrive used to make them. They come up for sale 2nd hand occasionally.

    Thumbs up Hello

Hello I have owned a two door 1974 model and found that even though it had many many many Kays on it I travelled all over Tasmania in it.
I replaced the Battery, Hoses, Brake pads, wiper blades, fuel tank and sender, Electric fuel pump was replaced with a Repco Electronic one, I also changed all the oils , fuses and globes, Positive and negative leads and also the dash pod, After all this I had one problem on one night trip and that was a fuse failure on the headlights.

Great Vehicle and I would not hessitate to purchase another one.

I currently own a 4 door 82 model with low kays and a 3.5 motor and 4 speed love it as much as the two door.

They are an exeptional vehicle and looked after they are marvelous offroad with good tyres standard.

I hope you find the right one as they are out there.

    cheers
