    Noisy box/TC

Nothing is perfect! I bought a 2 door as per previous post and picked it up today once I got it warm and away from traffic I noticed that the gearbox/TC has quite the whine, it changes well, does not jump out of gears or anything its just noisy. Any sugestions to shut it up hahaha?

Presumably it's the 4 speed LT95 - The first idea is to find a decent R380/LT230 from a Disco: that gives you 5 gears.

If the Lt95 is really noisy, then something is amiss - find another Lt95

Lastly- if it's not too bad, try changing to Syntrans. The 75/85 might be a little light for the LT95 (It's perfect for R380's) , but the M ( For big trucks) should do the trick. It's a little expensive but it does the job well.

Whether or not you want to try the various additives - don't know.

    They are noisy.

A lot can just be all the parts in the handbrake linkage vibrating, even the button in the end of the handle in mine buzzes. You could try spraying the linkages with grease first and see if that quietens it a bit first, before looking further.

A quote from the Haynes manual:

‘Note: It is sometimes difficult to decide whether it is worthwhile removing and dismantling the gearbox for a fault which may be nothing more than a minor irritant. Gearboxes which howl, or where the syncromesh is worn but double declutching can overcome the problem, may continue to perform for a long time in this stage A worn gearbox usually needs a complete rebuild to eliminate noise because the various gears, if re-aligned on new bearings, will continue to howl when different wearing surfaces are presented to each other.
The decision to overhaul therefore, must be considered with regard to time and money available, relative to the degree of noise or malfunction that the driver can tolerate.’

    cheers, DL

    ROTFLMAO

And you didn't expect an LT95 to whine?
    Seriously though.
Check that some genius in the past has not done up all of the screws/bolts holding the centre floor cover on.I have found that some do not reattach the screws to the firewall behind the heater , leaving a big gap. Fill with sikaflex.
Check that the handbrake and gear lever boots are intact and not cracked.
Maybe add some sound deadening under the carpets.
I made my 77 tolerable with the above and 81s on are quieter.
LT95s have BIG gears and the first sign of trouble is front bearing rattle at low revs in top which sounds like a GRRRRRR, Most of the noise is from the transfer and if there is lots of backlash then the first place to look is the shims on the intermediate shaft.

Thanks for the tips! The noise is only when you are cruising along, when you put the boot in it halves the noise and when you back off its silent(well almost). I will check the cover plates and change the oil, I am not worried about the noise as when it gets worse or brakes then I will worry about it. Is getting the shims done a box out job?
