MUC6414-MUC6415 OBSOLETE PARTS. Boot/trunk side windows gasket seals reproduction

    Hi all,
Due to my RRC needing new trunk side window seals and not being able to obtain them new anywhere (except in Japan at around 500 euros per set) I decided to contact one seal manufacturer, seals plus direct in the UK and even sent him a sample to see what could be done (searching for new old stocks, tracking the tooling) or see what alternatives could be found if the former where unobtainable.

This is what he told me:

    "Hi Robert

I have now heard back from my technical people with regard to the Range Rover seals.

To make the extrusion is not a problem. The joints were originally made by solvent joining, and unfortunately we are no longer able to carry out this method of manufacturer. The only option would be to shot mould the corners, but this would require tooling and we estimate that this would cost around £10,000. I am unable to track the old tooling down.

We are happy to supply the extrusion only and perhaps you could cut and mitre your own corners and bond with an adhesive. Price as follows.

122 metres (minimum production quantity) at £15.50 per metre

    Part cost tooling £275.00

Delivery Sample approx 4 weeks. Bulk production approx 2 weeks from sample approval.

The above prices are exclusive of carriage and VAT.

I hope that the above is of interest. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further assistance.

    Best regards

Of course I am not a seller, I am just a humble RRC owner fearing about the lack of spares availability for that model. The youngest seals out there are 15 years old and might be in the same or worse shape than mine.

Anibody found a suitable alternative for the seals? If so, please let me know.

The biggest problem is that I don't find any suitable candidate to substitute my RRC (Class, elegance, 4,46 meters long, less than 2 tons, electronics-free, abs-free, niggles-free, load capacity, people carrier and unbeatable commanding driving position) so must remain as first choice and I want to keep in on the road in good shape

Best regards and happy weekend to all

    Robert

    Robert,

A couple of alternatives to ask might be:

Scott's Old Auto Rubber in Australia (they might not be affected by any Euro bans on solvents! ) See Scott's Old Auto Rubber

They may be will to add it to their RR list: Range Rover

Also ask Spectrum Rubber: Spectrum Rubber

See Spectrum Rubber & Panels Pty Ltd

(I thought they were the same company - maybe not).

One more chap worth asking is Frank Schoen schoen@iprimus.com.au of the Hillman Group on Yahoo. He made up a series of quarter window seals for Hillman owners.

I have the same problem with the rubbers in my 73 RRC.
I had good luck with Spectrum rubber / Fitch the Rubber Man in Adelaide
There is a Spectrum catalogue online that has all of the extrusions.

Windscreen lock strip is 217.002 (need to check)
Door Seals and Rear Tailgate is available at about $15/m 235.019
Baily Channel is available - cant remember number.
(I've used these parts with success)

I've got my hands on a rubber extrusion that will fit the rear sliding windows (draft excluder? seal) but I dont have a retail source for it. Made by BSTG in adelaide. I need to modify it, and am yet to fit it.

Quarter Vent seals and rear sliding window seals seem impossible to source. Rear seals I am considering working out the various spectrum profiles that could be used and vulcanising the corners?

Quarter vent seals are even harder due to the moulded corner section, but if the lower section where the glass pivots can be replaced they may be able to be salvaged.

Another possbile option I have thought about is urathane, as the moulds are simple and it can be easily poured when hot.

    Cheers,

    Phil

Thank you so much for the links and sorry for the delay in answering (was unable to login for some time). Just contacted spectrumrubber to get a quote or to see if the can remanufacture a batch. Just too many RRCs out there need these seals.

Best regards and thank you from the other side of the pond
