BW rear output shaft seal.
I fitted a new seal today after only 10KK to cape York.
The seal is a very complex design with 3 sealing surfaces, the main one, a second double lip for dust and a third rib that sits against a machined surface on the yoke.
The lip against the yoke disintegrated and a bit jammed into the inner seal which was OK but this caused a big leak.
It 's hard to understand how it happened but maybe water forced the lip inwards.

Anyone else had this happen? The seal has to be pretty flush with the end of the mounting surface or there is no point to the lip, but this time I have put it in about 1MM and used lots of grease.

Hi, Philip. We have had several BW boxes over the years and have not had any problem with that particular seal failing. You may be onto it suggesting a dunking may have turned the exterior lip over to cause the leak, but I reckon you've been unlucky!
Cheers
