clutch buggered in a RRC, handy hints wanted

    Good mornin,

My clutch is due to be changed. I was planning to do it. Any handy hints before I start! Never done a 4wd clutch before, but done 20 odd car ones.

Oh how long do ya recken it will take me? 2 days be enough?

    Cheers NAT

    Hi Nat,
It depends on how much stuff is connected to the engine. Some people say pulling the engine with an engine crane makes clutch changes easier than removing two driveshafts and cables and mounts and stuff while working underneath. I've done RRC engine swaps and gearbox swaps, haven't yet had to a clutch by itself and face the choice. I do have an engine crane and pulling the engine isn't that hard.

Engine pull is easier with an LT95 and no hoist/pit/trans jack when solo, if LT77 I'd drop the box

Cut the heads of some bolts that fit through the bellhousing to the block as guides, it makes life ALOT easier, be sure to align the clutch well, I go by eye, I use the clutch alignment tool for drifing spigot bushes, not aligning clutches

Best advice is buy a hoist and transmission jack, but thats not for everyone

Engine forward i found easiest for me, removed rad/ grill and just pulled forward enough to fit the kit.

hey mate i did the same job on my '90 rrc 3.9+lt77 and i used an engine crane through the passengers front door with a sling to support the box to drop it. found it much easier to handle and put back in rather than separate transfer-gbox gbox-motor. just my 2c
    cheers

I gritted my teeth when my 92 did a rear main seal and paid someone with a hoist and transmission jack to do it. This is about the only job that I would consider contracting out. AND they left the Borg Warner with about 50CC of ATF in it GRRRRRR.

I did do a clutch in an 81 I had in Saudi Arabia and lifted the motor out alone with a come along. NOT FUN. BUT really no other option as no crane no hoist no transmission jack.

    Regards Philip A
