    Flapper kaput

    Hi all,
the flapper on my 1988rr finally expired after a huge backfire. The truck runs on LPG and has survived numerous backfires.I have always managed to repair the flapper(Using a pin punch and a hammer)but this time it is beyond repair.

    Thanks,
    Greybeard

I think XF Falcon ones are the same body, you just have to swap the electronics between them.

You really should have a backfire protector valve downstream of a flapper. Much safer.

I thought the Flapper was more like the VL commodore one , same problem with the wiring though .

have you tried to fix the backfire fault rather than fix what breaks? could be something as simple as a vacuum leak etc. just a thought

Thanks for that.I got one from the wreckers and it should be easy enough to swap the electrics.I also bought a XF engine fan and hub.I trimmed 5mm off the blades and it fits perfectly.
AS for the cause of backfires,I put it down as an act of god after trying everything I and several forumists can think of.

One thing that I haven't seen mentioned on the forum, that was the cause of many a destructive backfire in my old 88RR before I finally found it. The small 2-wire harness to the reluctor inside the distributor. These wires flex every time the vac-advance unit moves. On my car, the constant movement had eventually caused an internal fracture of one of the wires, resulting in intermittent backfires and even dead cuts upon change of throttle position. Worth a look if you haven't already.

Hi Pod,yes,i played around with my multimeter and all seemed good.
I have always suspected Lucas stuff and I did a Bosch conversion, ala
Bee utey.No noticeable difference but at least I know where to get spares if it claps out.
The ignition advance timing marks on the crankshaft pulley read in fractions of an inch instead of degrees so there is more scope to experiment. You have to love the old trucks, mine keeps me off the streets.
