The oil pump in the r380 is driven off the back of the layshaft. There are 2 flats on the end which engage in the pump

That part sticking out is the starter motor solenoid - looks OK to me.
Some sit on top of the starter, others are like yours.

yeah cheers, I just wasn't sure if they're was supposed to be a cover on the back of the soleniod, as the 'plunger and rod to the actual starter motor are visible/exposed. photo doesn't really show it

I would have though it would need to be covered to stop mud etc. entering the soleniod.

The plunger mechanism shouldn't be open to the elements like you describe but I can't see the mechanism in your photo. To me it looks like there's a metal plug fitted to the end of the solenoid.

I've never seen one open to the elements like that one.

Cut a sheetmetal circle and glue it on. I imagine there would have been a core plug of some sort. Look for a slight recess in the hole for a tin plug to sit in. You can make your own expanding plug, file to slight oversize, dome it between a socket and a small nut using a bench vice, a bit of goo and tap it in.

Is it an optical illusion or is the solonoid hard up against the extractors.
If it is IMHO it is not going to last long there.
