    Backlash.

Please help an RRC novice save a bit of time!

I have slight backlash on AND off the pedal.

Apart from uni joints, what else should I look at while I'm under it?

. . . and various suspension parts. It's usually just best to fix the easy things like driveshafts and put up with the rest, though it is good to check that the gearbox output flanges aren't loose.

    Thanks to all!

    Wot's a slip joint?

Furthermore, this is NOT longstanding- I only noticed it last week.

The slidey bit in the middle of a driveshaft. That's funny it's only just happened. Start checking the whole driveline so you can eliminate as much as possible.

Ye Gods!! I would NEVER had looked there.

OK the LED miner's light goes on my cranium on Wed & I'll start pushing, pulling, twisting & levering.

Chock the wheels and take the handbrake off or the shaft will be "locked" in position and seem okay.

    Progress Report

Nothing sinister. Just the usual slop re taking up the drive at the diffs.

The A-frame ball joint looks quite recent for a 290,000km vehicle.

I guess I'll keep driving & "listen for the dirty brown smell!"

How does the handbrake affect backlash?
