    85 Rangie problem

I have an 85 Rangie on my far western NSW property that runs great but every now and again it will completely shut down the engine. not like running out of fuel just complete and sudden shut off. If I wait a couple of minutes I can hear a faint "Ting" behind the dash or in the engine (like the sound of a thermal reset) and it will start and run fine. Very fraustrating and random but I cant use the vehicle as I have been stuck out more than 20 kls from the house (In the paddocks) a couple of times and I just dont trust the old girl.
Does anyone have experience with this sort of problem ? I may have to trailer it back to a Rangie dealer but thought I would try the brains trust here first.

Diagnosos time: next time it stops get a multimeter and see if there is battery voltage with the ignition on at the coil positive connection. If not hotwire it until you find the faulty connection, which could be an aftermarket immobiliser, for example.

Is it just a motor shutdown or the whole show ??

Do you get ignition lights after the shutdown ?

Thanks guys I'll try the multi meter, but it's a total engine only shutdown no affect on lights or anything other than the engine

if you can you track down what is making the "ting" sound and wire it out (bypass it) -

as beeutey posted - it may be an aftermarket immobiliser

A "TING" Noise would possibly indicate a bi metallic overload fuse, these things are normally housed in a metal can roughly the length of a glass 3AG fuse and are normally used on 70/80's headlight circuits but have been used in aftermarket applications.

Id look around the right hand side battery and if you can take some photos of the drivers side of the engine bay and post them to the forum and perhaps we can spot the culprit.

It may be as simple as a separate fusible link for engine only.

After market Starter relays may also cause issues.

So you get Ign lights and Crank but no fire?

    Thanks everyone

Thanks for the tips I'll do a search. At the moment I have all of the dash access panel hanging loose while I try to pick where the ting is coming from to me it sounds like behind the speedo, but very hard to pin down. I've looked for the fuse type holders or bimetal casings etc so far no luck !!!
