    air con

    Hi all.

Im having trouble with the air con on my 91 classic, i cant get the clutch to engage on the compressor. I know its full of gas as i just had it gassed and pressure tested the other day. if i hardwire the compressor it works fine but obviously doesnt cycle. Ive changed over all the relays aswell, also ive bridged the pressure switch but still no go. I followed the main feed wire for the compressor back to the relay behind the left hand kick panel and if i short out the terminals i can get the clutch to engage but again it wont cycle. Also should any of the relays behind that kick panel have constant power.

Any ideas would be great cheers.

Hi Jake, There was some good discussion of air con circuitry on Aulro a couple of months ago - you might want to try a search for it. One thing I remember from it is to check the thermostat switch that is part of the temperature slide control on your heating/air con controls. There is a small switch on the back of the slide control behind the facia panel - it is apparently adjustable with a tiny screw on the switch housing and you should be able to hear it click when the slide control is operated just slightly away from the extreme cold (blue) end. The thermostat sensor tube ,which is poked into the evaporator with a pipe back to the switch, also can fail and therefore not operate the switch to clutch the compressor in and out when temperature rises and falls.

I've also read that if your compressor cuts out too readily, depriving the cabin of cold air, then partially withdrawing the thermostat metal tube from the evaporator makes it hang in longer before getting to the level of coldness that triggers the switch to cut out.

Instead of bridging ... use a multi meter and double check with a test light and follow the line of 12v power, starting at the A/C fuse >>>> forward ....

    Cheers

    Smile air con

    hi

so finally got the air con going. What an mission. After 4 days of trying to figure it out finally sorted it.Now seen as i converted the 3.9 v8 to a 200tdi and removed the injection harness i didnt realise that the computer sent an earth to the clutch relay and also upped the revs when the air con gets engaged.so it was just a matter of putting a relay in place of the computer which sent an earth to the clutch relay. simple.......
