    Transmission / Rangey death threat

Have been getting those dreaded indications from my rev counter that I have some serious transmission issues..

Revs up to 5000 in the morning before changing down gears, questionable when selecting reverse, (you have to go back and forth between drive and reverse)..

Have read through multiple posts indicating its most probably the Govenor and transmission box, a quick call yesterday indicated $4000.00 in and out.

Quite a scary concept when looking at it as i've already spent over 15 grand on her, bringing the grand total to around abouts $20 gs.

As RRC owners the issue of getting continually pushed to sell by our wives and girlfriends and other onlookers to buy a "reliable" car is a statement which i'm sure is quite common for members of this thread.

the concept of selling a car which you "just need to get this done and she'll be sweet" is a difficult one as you are only ever going to get that back, or 10% in resale when you look at all the money which you've parted with.

I do relish those glimpses in time when everything is going well and you're able to pull your mates out of boggy sand or get over that ridge due to the lift kit and 33inch tyres.

I believe i will spend the money to get it fixed; possibly do an entire overhaul of the car to bring it back to reliability. Has anyone in Perth done this?? I think if anything else seriously goes wrong this death threat will have a more severe outcome.

    Yours Sincerely

    Poor Range Rover Owner..

My fathers rangie is doing the same thing and we are about to go through the process however we purchased a rangie with a rebuilt box just in case we ran into this problem. Rebuilt ones do come up for sale every now and again. I believe there was one on ebay with less than 1000km that sold for just over $1000 in the last few weeks. The quote you received is about the correct money for the job - removal and refit alone is around the $800 mark. You could also look round for a damaged disco with low milage however if you are intending to keep the car its probably wise to get it rebuilt yourself because you then have warranty etc

    Good luck

at worst you can get a second hand one for around 2k but I had mine quoted to get the govenor cleaned and all the guff that goes with it for 500 labour + parts so i thought that was very good.

Have a hunt around and go talk to the BMW/lendrover atuo specialists they can be much cheaper than a 'normal' auto shop

Gosh, I'm NOT the only over-spending nut around here...

Yes... and the Child Bride will never get into mine again... due to the seat moving when she did last time... and I sniggered when she asked "why?"...

She was, um, sitting on top of the seat-switches......:

Geez, do you like the thing? Then just fix it and get on with enjoying it. Have you noticed how there are an awful lot of Classics going for sale cheap these days? That's a sure sign that they aren't valued, which is the step old cars go through before they become rare, and valued. You can bet that in ten years your classic Rangie will attract sad-eyed old men who will utter the immortal words, "I used to have one of those. Wish I'd never sold it."

Someone on here - I think in Perth - made a mention recently of the Range Rover that they'd spent $25,000 on rebuilding before it burnt to the ground, years ago. So don't feel too bad about what you've spent on yours.

I'm about to replace the engine and gearbox on mine, and this after two years of constantly working on it and trying to convince the wife, (and, often myself), that it really will be worth it "when it's done". So we're all in the same rather large boat!
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

Feel the pain. After I replaced my engine (in a D2 so a lot dearer when purchased and only 6 months on) the auto indicated it was on the way out so 3K later and box back in. Same issue. Turned out to be MAF sensor but now I have new engine and auto/tfr and feel much better about going out.

I think the first thing I would be doing is flushing all the old fluid out and renewing the fluid + new filter + some Nulon auto treatment.

Um That may have been me ..but that was in 1989 when mine burnt after spending 25 k rebuilding a 2 door.
I have since had a 82 4 door and now my current 89 ..will I ever be rangieless?...I dont think so..I still love the driving position and the lovely V8 sound...however the Td5 is much better on the pocket for fuel...
