Got word back from the club - no dramas with club reg having a later model engine in it with EFI. Only seriously modified vehicles with non factory power plants - 350 chevs, etc would be an issue. Car has to be road worthy, and have no unauthorised engineering mods, so basically fully street legal, so even large tyres, non engineered body lifts, excessive spring lifts, etc are a no no - all clear for me there so no issues.

So, full steam ahead - time to rip the 3.5 out...

For those that haven't seen it yet and want to follow my progress with the conversion, I have started a thread in 'Members Rides' - http://www.aulro.com/afvb/members-ri...ie-hiline.html

    MAF Placement

Just a quick one - as the intake will be made up as I go on the 3.9 and I won't be using the factory pipes, does it matter how far from the engine the MAF ends up?

    Cheers - Gav

In theory it should be a foot from the throttle body, and that is why it is on the air cleaner.
BUt mine is only a couple of inches from teh throttle body and works OK.

    Power steering lines

Just another quick one - I'm sure it won't be the last - the power steering lines on the D1 have different flares at the end. Looking at it. I think the easiest option would be to use the original Rangie lines, and have the one fitting on the line that comes out of the pump redone - would someone like Pirtek be able to do this?

    Cheers - Gav

Personally, I'd take all the hoses in and have new ones made up with the ends that you need. I had an old hose blow on my Rangie, and it was the smell of ATF on the exhaust that alerted me. Luckily it wasn't at speed on the highway. What a great way to burn your car!

    P/S line

Ditto, but the Disco I was driving at the time did blow at 100 k on the Logan Motorway in QLD, no fire though thank ****

I agree, I would get new ones made better in the long run and you have the Rangie in bits prefect time to do it

yep pirtek or enzed did this to mine when i fitted the 3.9L.
I think i used one rangie line and one disco line with the modded end, was a few years ago now. just make sure the lines you use are in good nick.

on a side note, and i might have missed it, but are you using the 3.5L or 3.9L intake manifold and plenum??

EDIT:: just re-read it, your 86 is carby, so you have to use the 3.9 intake manifold!

the factory sender for your temp guage will have to be adapted somewhere. and theres no direct screw in spot for it on the 3.9L manifold.

Thanks for all the replies. Now I have that bit under control, a quick question about fitting a Disco radiator into the Rangie. It will fit no probs, but existing mounts need modification - no big deal, but before I reinvent the wheel, does anyone have any tips or photos on this?

    Cheers - Gav

IIRC i just used the disco mounts and drilled holes in the rad support panel where they lined up, mines got a body lift though.

you will need to switch to disco style expansion tank if you wish to use the bottom rad hose.

Otherwise you can cut and shut it and delete the pipe that runs to the disco expansion tank and use the standard RR expansion tank. whatever takes your fancy!

Thanks for that - I have the Disco expansion tank. I've got to grab a few bits off the Disco tonight - I'll grab the mounts as well.
