Yeah, the silver doesn't look too bad, and contrasts well with all the black bits - pillars, bars, etc - looks like silver doesn't hide the dents too well though...

Second that re-Silver. My last rangie was silver and it was a good 'off-road' colour. White is good off-road colour although boring

So, about 2 weeks behind where I wanted to be, I have finally got everything out that I need out. Next job is cleaning, followed by cleaning, then some cleaning...
While everything is out, it is a good time to fix the steering box leak, and the many leaks from the TC. These seem to be the only places I was actually dripping oil - none from the engine or diffs which is good.
So - a few pics...
There's a transfer case in there somewhere...
There's a hole in the rangie...
And the engine and box out - the box is sold, but the engine needs a new home - open to offers - see the markets section.

So, after cleaning the TC a lot, and after visiting AlienD2 today to help/watch how his TC came apart, I came home and pulled mine apart as well to check a few things out.
Alien's spider gear shims in the center diff were badly worn, with 2 completely gone - a common problem apparently, so I thought I'd better check mine out while I had the opportunity. I won't go into the disassembly here - Alien will be posting some detail about this elsewhere. Mine is a lot earlier box, so there are a few differences - notably the intermediate shaft assembly. Mine has internal thrust washers and shims inside. I checked the end float before pulling this apart, and it is at 13 thou, which is just under the max spec (14 thou) so I'm probably not going to bother doing anything about that. Pulled the shaft and the thrust washers are in pretty good nick. All gears and other internals are in top condition.
Pulled the center diff spider gears out and............ all my shims are still there! but, they are all paper thin and pretty much had it, so well worth the effort in doing this - and only a day ago I didn't even know these could be a problem, so I got really lucky in finding out about this while everything was apart - A big thanks to AlienD2 for letting me poke around at his place this arvo seeing what was inside his before I pulled mine apart.
I'll grab some parts during the week and stick it all back together, and that will be 1 job done, and I can put this back in knowing all will be good in there for a while to come.

That transfer case has some serious anti corrosion protection added to it, would have taken some time removing. I like the way the front opens up on the RRC, it's will make it so much easier putting the whole lot back in. You wont even need to remove the cross member.
It was good you found out about the transfer bits now. It would have been a bit annoying to have to remove it again. I was thinks of pulling my old one down as a bit of a learning exercise. Can't hurt to get a bit of practice.
Cheers, David.

Yep, corrosion was never going to be an issue....and it took some shifting - a combination of degreaser, scraper, wire brush and the pressure waser - it still isn't perfect, but clean enough to work on.
Yeah, being able to unbolt the front made life very simple - once everything was unbolted, it took all of 2 minutes to have it sitting on the driveway.
Have a peak inside the TC when you get a chance - they are pretty easy to work on, probably with the exception of the centre diff assembly - if you pull it appart, getting the pre load set on the bearings may be a little time consuming by what we have seen and read on the subject, but thankfully that isn't an issue if you only need to get to the spider gear shims.

looks like a good project..... keep up the good work.
BTW good you saved it from the wreckers![]()
So, after much cleaning & painting, and replacing the leaking output shaft seal on the steering box, the new donk is in - just sitting there at the moment, but it should be pretty damn close to running by Sunday arvo. As I have the fuel tank and lines still to replace, I may not have it running this weekend as planned, but I should be close. After my week in Adelaide, I will be itching to finish it off. For those that don't look at the 'Projects & Tutorials' forum, the transfer case is stripped at the moment for a few new parts to go in it. The parts for the transfer case have arrived, but I'll pick them up the week after next and finish this off.

Looking good. That's the grwat thing about old Rangies, they're so simple to work on and removing the running gear is straight forward
You're better than me, I haven't started on mine yet. I won't be going to EFI as the original carb 3.5 is superb (just needs a new water pump) but needs some rust rerpairs in the floors, etc..
