    electrical problem

hi everyone im having a typical range rover problem but i think its a bit more then typical ... a few months ago when i brought my 81 2dr classic it was running to batteries but i dident like the way it was set up so both batteries where starting the car and running everything now ive recentley taken the second battery out and i went to start it and all i got was a click from the stater and figured the starter was rooted but then the choke cable started smoking and when opening the passenger door the condenser fan would turn on...nothing works except a couple of the warning lights on the dash ..so have i done something when i took the second battery out or what

You must have removed the main earth cable between your starting battery and the engine block. Just fit a new one direct from the battery negative to a decent earth point somewhere like the engine mount, the inlet manifold, or similar. Then check the earth strap between the engine and body is connected and clean at both ends.

sounds like you lost the earth connection from the engine to the chassis/battery. when you tried to start it the choke cable was the only earth available. it may have gone through the choke warning light and into other warning lights and damaged the wiring. you will have to earth the engine and check the dash wiring for signs of melting.

You haven't removed a good battery and left a crook one behind have you ?
If you had a good old fashioned solenoid coupling the two batterys or maybe both batterys connected in parallel a good battery will mask a crook one. You only find out when you remove the good battery.
