    Help please - 1994 3.9 noisy engine

    Hello Gurus,
I am the "lucky" owner of a 94 Classic vogue. It is a hard dash vogue (I think) with a 3.9 motor that has dual fuel fitted. It is an auto and seems to use a little oil but has no other major problems. It has about 260,000km on the clock but I don't have much in the way of engine rebuild history. The suspension is still on air and it works well.

I am new to the scene and not too good at searching as I am not yet familiar with the jargon. I have 2 questions if someone would be so kind to attempt to answer. I am currently on quite a tight budget so I don't want to plough vast amounts of money into the vehicle and I am happy to attempt repairs myself.

    1. The car runs perfectly on LPG and starts well on petrol but when it warms up bucks and surges and is pretty much undriveable. I have been told this is the MAF sensor and a refurbished replacement will be $450 fitted and calibrated. Does this sound right? My other guess would be the injectors but I have not done anything with these yet.

    2. More worryingly, I have a "ticking" noise that appears to be coming from the right bank cylinder head. It sounds like an exhaust gas leak but I cannot feel or see anything. I am a not very gifted but intrepid home mechanic more familiar with motorcycles. Under the premise that it was a header flange leak I replaced these today. Dropped the front exhaust section, used new gaskets with a small film of exhaust sealant. Bolted it back up. Still the same!

I tried to locate the noise with a home made stethoscope (fuel siphon tube) and the noise seems loudest coming from an area inside the right head just behind the rear exhaust outlet. Again, I can see no sign of exhaust gas leaking so I assume there is something going on inside the head. Could this be a bad or damaged lifter? Any other ideas. What else can I do before I pull the head off?

    Many thanks for any suggestions.

Ticking sounds like a hydraulic lifter. Usually loudest when the car is cold then becomes quite when the oil pumps it up. (or quieter at least)

Unfortunately it could also be a head gasket external leak, have seen a few LPG RV8's with this phenomenon

With these V8s, if you don't know how old the engine is or it's history, then it's more than likely that the cam is shot and one or two lifters as well. If the oil isn't changed very regularly, then these cams die early and since older cars tend to be neglected, that's usually the case. If you don't mind the work, you can take off the sump and have a look up at the camshaft. I bet you'll see the lobes have gone dark. You could also take off the valve cover and see if any of the pushrods and rockers are too loose.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

I bought a 3.9 motor with 250k on it, when I removed the valley cover I noticed the cam was stuffed. The previous owner did say there was a bit of ticking but not too bad. The lifters were shagged too. From what I've been told the cam/lifters/timing chain should be replaced @ 160k.

This job may have been done already? You could remove a rocker cover and inspect how much lift you get from each pushrod and see if any of them are on the minimal side. Before this though might be worth doing a compression test first.

Is the noise present from cold, only there when warmed up, better or worse at hot or cold, better or worse under load?? worst case is a loose cylinder liner, noise will be absent or slight when cold and become severe as the engine warms up. Lifters are usually worse when cold. Check your exhaust manifolds for cracks. Do a compression test, wet and dry, to check for a burnt out valve.

    Thanks all.
The noise is present from cold and seems to get less as the engine warms up. It has been like this for some time, maybe done 800km in this state and no apparent loss in performance.

I just have to get the time to work on it.
