    coolant leak

    Hi All,

i have a 92 Vogue Se , V8 3.9. overall runs well and is a pleasure to drive. ( probably more comfortable than the puma )

i have discovered a coolant leak and wnat to identify the place that it is cming from. i dont know the name of the part m but have posted a photo to see if you can identify it for ma dn then i can work out how to fix , if it is DIY or mechanic.

    see image attached.

it seems to be coming from the back of this part where it joins the wheel of the drive belt. ?? ( could be totoally technicaly wrong in terms here)

any suggestion on the part that this is leaking from and big or small job , would be appreciated. thanks

It is most probably the water pump. Is there a big fan on the front of the part?

If it is the water pump this is a pretty common failure and calls for a new water pump. The cost is around $200 plus labour.

Do not let the water get low or the engine could overheat and you will be up for big bucks.

Thanks Phillip , seems you are correct , found my Haynes manual and it is indeed coming from the water pump. Does this mean a replacement pump or just the gasket ? eBay quoting about 150 for pump and gasket.

Manual says relatively easy as DIY , I guess for a 3 - 400 job , piece of mind that a qualified mechanic has done it , not a lot of money to get it done professionally.

Have to smile at your statement that the Range rover is 'probably' more comfortable than the defender!
You need to replace the water pump, as it is the seals that eventually wear out and cause coolant loss, not the gasket. Time was when you could renew the seal and bearings in a water pump, but we now live in a throw-away world. Replacement is a straightforward job and requires only normal tools other than to remove the fan hub, which may or may not need a tool to hold the hub (I can loan you this if you are up my end of Gippsland).

Cheers Pod , yes I say probably , mainly because the Recaros I have in my fender are pretty good , it's the manual and the hard ride that give it to the RRC and the fact that my wife drives the rangie , so I need to justify my holding onto the fender and the RRC ( cause she wants a new Golf )

Anyway enough bout my LR fascination. Good explanation as to why replace the pump , apparently the tool to hold the wheel spinning can be a long screw driver , so I'll have a crack at that first. Thanks for the offer to loan yours.

Do I need to fully drain the coolant from the system ?

Yes, drain it if you don't know how old it is. Or even if you do. Because then you'll get bits of dirt in it anyway, and new coolant isn't too expensive. Use good stuff. These engines need good coolant, changed every two years or so, and regular oil changes or they can get quite upset.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
