Well ...it appears as tho the front propshaft has been removed .. so, from the LR book, is as follows

Put the handbrake ON ...

Grab a 30?? or 32mm socket and the torque wrench ... set it to 20nm
At the front drive-flange of the transfer case is a large 30?? or 32mm nut
(The VC is located directly behind that front flange)

Install the socket to nut and pull the torque wrench @ 20nm in a clockwise direction
It should turn clockwise 25 to 30 degrees for a duration of 1 minute for it to be declared OK

If it does not move .... then it is stuffed (locked)
If it free falls (Turns quickly) ..... then it is stuffed


Putting in a new VC is a couple of hours work .... You do not to have to remove the box.
Installing a new "output drive shaft" is about 4 hours work ... You do not have to remove the box <<<< But there is a couple of "gags" (tricks) to know, about doing it.


BTW .... Find a transfer box out of a Disco ... I believe that it should fit straight up

... No probs .... Ask POD about the details of fitting an LT230 transfer box.... as I believe that he has done it

On a side note ...

The biggest killer of a Borgwarner VC is tyre size
You CANNOT run oddball sized tyres ... ALL tyres MUST be exactly the same O/D size .... IE You must have all 4 tyres of the same wear depth

If buy new tyres .... you replace ALL 4 of them (not just 2 on the front and leave the rear for later)

Amen to that... the PO of my 'Event Horizon' had 99% Coopers on the front, and around 85 % on the rears.

- Only took me a few months to work out 'why'....


The VC tries desperately to split the drive 50/50 Front Rear, any deviation from that and it starts working. Working = 'Life-shortening', and the longer in 'time' or distance it has to work... the more it decays. Making it work hard, as in sand or enthusiastic (ok, showing off in front of Jap 4WDs) off-roading does'nt seem to be as damaging.

The better split for road use is supposedly around 40% front and 60% rear, from what I've read.
Let's face it, over 90% of most 4WD mileage is spent on the smooth black stuff...

I LOVE MY BORG WARNER transfer case..Looked after they last as long as lt230 before needing anything doing and I never have to lock my centre diff and I have gone further than those that have a an LT230 Off Road up hills etc... and my rangie is about to clock over 400k and yes I have repaired the Borg warner as in per normal wear an tear items at 360k...

Bradtot, "just for the record" a few points,
1/ Functionality trumps finesse especially with a Land Rover County that was made in 1985 (even if fitted with bits from an '88 Range Rover).
2/ Many of us old guys have lots of time (relatively) and not a lot of money.
3/ Old mate Dick has lots of old landy bits, and if one of his old transfer cases, albeit a manual diff lock one can be used then the most economical and practical way to go is to instal that one and never, never, never have to worry about 'dat bad ole' Borg Warner device again.
4/ That old County has crisscrossed this "wide brown land" many times both before and after the installation of the Borg Warner V/C transfer case.
I have no doubt that the BW device is a great boon to luxury motoring, otherwise the good gents at Land Rover in Solihull would not have used it in what was then and is still the best luxury 4WD in the world, but that does not help those of us who just want our old beat up Land Rovers to do what they do best.
I am sure you can see the logic, and it's not really a competition.

If the info that I have been given on this thread [below] is correct, then the LT230 on your LT77 may fit the auto-- but I am not sure and so I could be wrong about this.

Jack up one front wheel.
You can try rotating that wheel if you have arms like Samson.
OR
Slip a screw driver through a fron uni joint and try turning the shaft; with reasonable pressure should take about 30-60 seconds to move it about 90 degrees.
Soon see if its locked!
