    Steering box bearing change point?

    G'day peeps,
    My steering box has decided to spring a leak. I was talking to the pwr steer mob and they said at some point they changed from a bushed design to a roller bearing version but did not know the date at which this occurred? Mines a Jan '93 job. Btw they said they would rebuild it for $495 and would Machine it for roller bearings if it wasn't already for $200 extra.

    Thats pretty cheap for a rebuild with boring for bearings. A new box can be had for not much more, that said personal experience sees modded boxes last longer between leaking than a stock bearing box.

    It used to cost us around $400+ just for boring and thats in batches of 10. You need to make sure the hard chroming on the shaft is ok. If it's worn you're up for another $200 or so for grinding and rechroming. Never seen anyone sleeve one before.

    At $695 to rebuild, would suggest you price a new box from the u.k, if this one has lasted 20 years another new one should do the same. By the same token i just replaced mine as it only lasted 10 years (2002 def)

    AFAIR the change point was in mid 91. My car was October 91 and the VIN was after roller bearing change over. I found this many years ago and I cannot remember the source now.

    I bought a new Adwest box complete with Pitman arm from UK for about $540 AFAIR just a few months ago.

    Cheers Phil and frantic. I was going to check out Ashcroft actually but I don't think the box itself really needs rebuilding. It's not noisy or sloppy could just be that the lack of use during the conversion over the past year and half has caused the seals to go hard? Good to know its ready a roller type anyway.

    my be unrelated but i replaced my output seal as that was leaking on mine and it hasnt leaked a drop since! was an easy job once i got the drop arm off which was a bugger (advice on the forum was to use a puller and smack the joint with a hammer once under pressure) but after that was easy to do.
    have read that some people have scored the output shaft though so it will always leak even with new seals
