    MAF question

I recently noticed a fairly steep hike in fuel consumption on my '93 Vogue and (having swapped out the throttle position and road speed sensors last year) have turned my attention to the MAF. I pulled the cable and noticed no difference in performance/running/fuel consumption so I assume that my original MAF (ESR1057, 70385 is cactus. I had another second hand one lying around and installed it and now the car is running like a complete dog. (Really intermittent engine power at part throttle, fine at idle, fine at full throttle, even worse fuel consumption) So I think it's time for a reliable replacement. There are several units on ebay from the U.S that have the same model number compatibility but they all seem to have 1 extra pin on the connector. (The Aus connector has one pin of 6 remeoved) I believe this is something to do with U.S. models having an additional oxygen sensor but I'm not 100% sure. The closest thing I can find in the U.K. is a different part number (ESR 5198 70388 and I'm not sure what the difference is/whether it's compatible.(the vehicle model chart indicates that it is)

Both the U.S and U.K aftermarket options come in at around $120-$150 shipped whereas anything here in at least triple that for a new part.

Can anyone shed any light on the matter? Cheers

Hi folks for those interested: 70388B arrived from the UK the other day for the Princely sum of $114 aud. it works a charm. Idle issues resolved and fuel consumption back to standard land yacht versus Oil Tanker. Interestingly enough my hunting idle, that I put down to a malfunctioning stepper motor, is back to normal. I think (and this is purely based on my amateur mechanical logic) that the cactus MAF may have been sending erroneous high airflow readings to the ECU meaning the thing was just pouring fuel in a idle and running like a complete dog. I ended up going for the UK variant with the correct number of pins however I am curious to see if the US model with the extra pin would also work... May have to order one at some stage and find out ($90ish)

Hope this is useful to someone out there.

Just out of curiosity, I asked ALTO Land Rover at St Leonards the cost of an OEM replacement MAF for my 92. They had one in stock. $3250

Needless to say I walked out. Not even sure I gave the service guy an answer when he asked if I wanted it...

There's some good info in this thread.

Is the MAF a simple R & R job or does it have to be "tuned in" to the engine?

There is just one adjustment on the maf and it's for the base co setting.
Correct procedure is to adjust this with a sniffer in the exhaust.

But generally you can check the outputs yourself and adjust the volts with unit plugged in and engine @ idle. Depending on engine specs anything between 1 and 1.5v is a viable setting. With the lower being leaner on fuel.

Assuming timing is correct, this adjustment setting should be done first, then check and adjust base idle, TPS.

There are numerous threads on AULRO and over the internet detailing the test and setting procedure. All that is required is a multimeter, an allen key or two (for maf and base idle adjustment) and a flat head screw driver (for TPS adjustment)!

    Cheers
