Starting Issues 93 RRC since major rainful

    Hi There,

I'm trying to establish why I had so much difficulty in starting the RRC this morning. I eventually got it started but it really struggled to get there.

As you know, Rockhampton had a huge downpour the other night with 100kph winds, 500mm rain etc. Yes the poor old girl was left in the rain facing the wind/rain. The next day I thought I'd go for a quick spin to check out the damage of the surrounding areas. Went to start but would only wimper now and then with no luck in starting. I thought maybe coil the coil and dizzy may have gotten wet so I left it until this morning to try.

This morning I had no luck for a while and decided to do usual fault finding.

    1. Checked fuel pressure.... all good
    2. Removed main lead from dizzy, earthed to metal and could get over 20mm of spark.
    3. removed spark plug and was slightlty wet from fuel, had spark.
Also inspected dizzy cap. contacts were a little dirty, so I scraped and cleaned and tried to start still no luck but it seemed to wimper a little more frequently now. Tried again and over a minute later of cranking it just started wimper enough and very slowly started. As it started, there was quite a bit of smoke and then it ran smooth. Starts good now but I don't really know what it was that fixed it.

Any thoughts? I'm starting the think maybe the dizzy cap, but why did it struggle even after the clean? I could see no evidence of any water contamination anywhere around the coil, cap and bim024 amp. Just to note though that my sunroof does not seal the best and it's still a little moist on the hoodlining. I pulled the unichip from under drivers seat and there was some condensation on top of the unit. Maybe some moisture had made itself in amongst wiring somewhere?

    Cheers

    Steve

They're not hard to flood, especially if the distributor is a little damp. I recall flooding one shortly after starting once, and having to wait an hour before it would restart. I believe you should hold the accelerator flat to the floor to clear flooding. The ECU recognises the accel position.

Also worth checking the fuel pressure regulator is not leaking fuel into the vacuum hose and then the inlet manifold. I've seen a couple failed this last year.

I'm starting to think there maybe an issue with the fuel pressure regulator because it does read quite high, I know I've talked about this in the past but with medium burst of the accelerator I get 50psi easily and at idle it's about 46. on ignition it's 46psi. mmm. I'll try holding the accelerator flat next time if this happens. Thanks ) I do have a spare regulator so I might try another unit next weekend.

I'd be drying out the ignition wiring such as HT leads, around the spark plugs, around the coil, take the dist cap off and dry inside, look for condensation inside the distributor, i.e. under the clear plastic cap where the pickup is. Very easy for moisture to get in there in such conditions, not so easy for it to get out by itself. Wet weather obviously won't affect your fuel pressure reg so check all the ignition stuff first.

My guess would be moisture on the leads and cap resulting in flooding = much smoke on starting, a quick spray with wd40 or equivalent at the first sign usually solves the problem.

I'll be giving both of mine a good spray before I attempt to go anywhere after this front moves through, could be a couple of days before that happens though, had about 300mm since 9am 26/1.

They dont seem to like high humidity and heavy rain as I have had similar issues with my old classics where the initial startup was very choppy and the engine seemed to not fire on all 8 and would after a few moments come good.

The last time this happened I popped the bonnet and went hog wild with WD in the dizzy and dizzy cap and she then fired up no problem.

My 89 RRC has trouble starting when the fuel cut out relay gets wet. It sits on the throttle body bracket.
