84 Range Rover Highline oil leaks

I have a 1984 Highline four door Auto, and it just seems to poor oil out. It has only done 270kms with full log books, and it all seems to come from the valley cover. I can't believe how unhelpful the mechanics in west NSW seem to be. These cars were sold new here! The last mechanic two mechanics told me it was too hard and not worth doing as the car wasn't worth much. I was ****ed off with that, it's my car I have it because I love Range Rovers and live the purity of the early Four doors (am eyeing off a two door that's in a field nearby). So is it a complex job on a twin carbie? Also I am having cooling issues. I blew a heater hose, can't complain about about parts got it straight from land rover dealer in dubbo...have fitted them, and am about to replace the thermostat. I know the main engine fan is not working, but as I do highway driving, the water shouldn't boil should it?

I have to get to Brisbane as my bf is a land rover wrecker so I can get a new fan.

Oh and does anyone have a good drivers seat in the lovely ginger ish velour?

Oil: Blocked crankcase flametrap device ( Cylindrical, on the other rocker cover where the oil filler cap would be). Engine blow by builds up pressure instead of being sucked into the carbs and blows oil out of the edges of the inlet manifold. Solution: Either clean it out with carby cleaner, or get a new one. Most of the time a new inlet manifold is called for too. Both items are reasonably available. Doesn't take too long.

84 Range Rover Highline oil leaks

    Hi Gazelle,

I've just recently done a replacement of a hydraulic lifter on my 3.5 V8 (Carbies) on 2 door classic and necessitated replacing a perfectly good valley cover gasket

If like me your not a mechanic a Haynes repair manual is a good investment
You will need to drain your radiator and I suggest doing it then you change the thermostat.

For me I also wrote down step by step what I pulled off and marked all hoses where they came from and took plenty of photo's with iPhone as well for reference.
Besides the valley cover gasket you will need the two rubber gaskets (F&R) that are held with a bolt and bracket under the valley cover.
I also bought grey gasket seal for around valley cover and rubber gaskets just be sure of good seal (you don't want any water leaks)

I don't know how long you have owned your Rangie but as langy says check flame trap and with a manual it may give you an indication if your hoses are setup correctly on your carbies.

Be careful as valley cover gasket is thin metal and I cut myself (previously fitting one) and wore gloves this time around.

Check those two small hoses that connect from back of water pump to pipes on the aluminum manifold that carbies are attached to.
Replace them as mine looked OK but developed a split when refitting and was not picked up until it was all back together and started engine.... and leaked like a siv ......

As to fan not working, I wouldn't drive my Rangie if the fan not working as they don't like getting hot.

    Hope all goes well

    Cheers

    Baggy
