What sort of engine? Hydraulic lifters?
I run a small amount of old fashioned redex (upper cylinder lube) in all of my vehicles both current and in the past, swear by it. Did 400,000 k's in my last Subaru, still going fine when I sold it.
If it is a lifter problem, try some subaru lifter treatment (available at dealers), then change oil and filter. I have seen this work wonders in some older gummed up engines.
Depending on the engine, try removing the valve cover and squirting a thin oil (upper cylinder lube?) around the valve stem, this may work depending on the quality and or type of valve stem seal you have.

remove rocker cover & rockers, make adaptor to put compressed air in spark plug hole. remove valve retainer and spring, grab valve in cordless drill chuck,

release compressed air - spin valve , a bit of brasso and WD40 on the stem & bobs your uncle,

put compressed air back on (so you dont drop the valve) and reassemble.

Given you've posted in the RRC section are you referring to a 3.5/3.9 V8? If so, give it the 'goingbush' treatment and, if as I suspect it's the exhaust valves, remove the valve stem oil seals...not needed and their removal assists in reducing further buildup... let's know how you get on ?

    Yes I remember it well!
I always put a small bottle of Golden Fleece "Upper Cylinder Lube" in my motorcycles and a large bottle in my cars. It was always in those miniature sized (choice of two sizes) oil bottles near the bowsers. Got the idea/habit from my father, seemed like a good idea at the time but not really sure if ever did any good, but probally didn't do any harm though.
Probally softer on the engine than the "Liquid Tungsten" that was in CX3! :-)

    Cheers, Mick.

Take the air cleaner off and tip some two stroke oil down the throat. Warning, do this in a well ventilated area - it will generate a LOT of smoke. Seen this done (and done it myself) many times.

    Cheers,
    Tom.

P.S. Make sure your neighbours are not working for the EPA.

I thought the main reason for sticky valves was a build up of carbon /varnish/combustion gunk on the stems. So 2 stroke oil acts as a solvent for carbon/varnish etc... is this correct?

Hi guys thanks for the replies. I think there is an inlet valve open as exhaust gases are coming from rocker cover. A few weeks ago i took off rocker cover and i think no 1 valve and spring were not returning to normal position but a little low. I'm running 5w oil in it with nulon valve freeing additive. I think there is less exhaust coming through the rocker. I have added two stroke oil into inlet but not much changed i might have to flood the crap out of the cylinder as i have only added it through t piece on inlet manifold.
Plan is to do Compression test. confirm valve. Thread rope into cylinder. Compress cylinder with rope into it to hold valve and take valve spring off then work valve up down with thin oil......
I believe the heads are from 3.9 but not sure. Its using a lot of oil atm so i need to get this done prob on weekend. If not next weekend is strip down. so any tips on head rebuild. Tips on cleaning up valve guides and guides themselves? Cheers in advance. reghards matt
