    Ign Module/pickup problems

    Rangie would start this morning.....ran fine when parked yesterday.

    Has remote module with coil on top, two wires from pickup in dissy.....86 EFI 3.5.

    No spark......12v at coil+ and coil - with ign on........12v between battery and coil + and - with coil leads disconnected.

    Measured resistance at 2 wire plug on pick up coil........open curcuit....not sure whats its spose to be, but open curcuit seems suspect to me.

    I have a 92 Disco and 88 Rangie parts cars, but both have module on the dissy......

    Any way to determine between module and pickup? With a 50km drive to work, i'm pretty keen to get it running........

    should change from open circuit to dead short to earth when cranking this is how the coil fires for each spark plug if you have a multimeter witha buzzer(contunuity test) then this is easy and quick test if not set to ohms and should change from OL to 0

    just re checked pickup with dissy in diff spots, still open curcuit.....

    The pickup coil will fail with age. I've met a few. You can salvage the pickup out of any similar v8 dissy and solder and heat shrink it to the wiring that goes to the module. The resistance of the pickup should be around 3000 ohms.

    The resistance of the coil doesn't short circuit at the pickup points, it doesn't work that way. The pickup coil generates a small voltage as the star rotor moves past the pickup. If you have a multimeter connected to the pickup it will fluctuate as these voltages are generated.

    Any distributor with the module on the side of the dissy needs just to have the module unscrewed to expose the two connectors of the pickup. Make a new 2 wire harness to the old module, or run the coil off the existing module with the correct connections. I can't remember which ones go where, but you could just get the ignition harness off your donor car and transplant the lot.

    may try the pickup from other rangie to get it going.

    so open curcuit = bad? This car has approx 530k on it.

    was looking at you post re the BIM024...........may be on the to-do list sooner rather than later..

    If it stays open ciurcit then yes should change from open to. Continuity to ground . So constant open circuit is bad

    It's not a set of points. Its a pickup coil that is electrically isolated from the distributor case.

    Open circuit means the pickup coil had a broken wire inside, nothing else.

    Broken wire (inside insulation) right at the back of the two pin plug for pickup coil. Miltimeter reading 3200 ohms.

    Running sweet again
