Fairly common, I've seen a few. Just acquire a donor 300tdi Disco series 1 and remove the entire engine/trans package to put into the RRC. You need all the other stuff like exhaust, radiator, intercooler and the engine mounts off the D1 chassis. These will need to be welded and engineer approved to your chassis. Wiring is straight forward, the ignition coil feed wire does the diesel shut off solenoid, alternator and starter wires just need extending. The EFI computer comes out in a big bunch all on its own.

Hi. Was involved in several Tdi conversions which is by far the easiest way to go... as bee utey rightly says. The VM motor was ok... but not without its problems. Being underpowered was one of them. Perkins powered classics in the UK were dogs.. Noisy and slow but surprisingly good on fuel! There's a lot on here who'll say dieseling a classic is sacrilege but unless you plan to LPG it and have several huge tanks, diesel is the go... Sorry to the purists among you. Now, back to the topic in hand, depending on budget IMO option 1 is the trusted Tdi. Option 2 (and my choice) would be a smooth 5 or 6 cylinder (more in keeping with a Luxury Classic)... There's a $1200 Td5 on Gumtree at the mo, and if u were quick, the box to suit would be there too. Nissan RD28 would sound nice and go quite well.... Then there's option 3.... You go all balls out GMC V8 TD, Duramax, etc etc!! All dependant on budget and skills on hand. Keep us all posted with which way ya go! Cheers!

And the RD28 had all the piston oil spray gubbins installed in the factory so that a Turbo upgrade is easy and quick. The manifolds are available, you just need to find a turbo that matches the revs and CFM profile.

    Dougal can help with that...........

That would have been one big weekend! Sounds like the way to do it. Nice one

It's even easier than that. They did a factory RD28T in late 90's patrols.
Being idi and 6 cyl it's nice and smooth. But those same reasons make it about 20% less efficient than 4cyl direct injection engines.

The 4BD1T fits and works quite nicely. I get 10km/l on a trip, about 8.5 km/l short running and offroad. The 4BD1T can also beat all the stock rover V8's for power while offering about 3x the torque. But doing this will cost you a fair bit more cash for driveline upgrades.
