    1974 RRC Information

G'day, I'm picking up a `74 soon and want to know if there is a way to find production information about the car using the chassis number. I've only just found out that you can't get a car history report for a pre-89 vehicle, which is disappointing. For now I only have the chassis number and the codes from a QLD mod plate but I know the paint is not original as it is like a pale Caspian Blue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - cheers!

    G`day ,

the early chassis numbered ones are not like the later ones with a VIN number only very limited information .

The first 3 numbers denote the type , UK market , Export R or L drive CKD ETC .

The next 5 numbers give a build year as a guide . Till around 1975 the numbers were sequenced .

The last letter denotes design modifications .

If you give the chassis number , i`ll give you what info i have , which won`t be alot , seems there wasn`t alot or recording done .

I do know that it is a RHD export model, built in June 1974. Would like to know the original paint, although considering that this `74 is a convertible ute - originality is not immensely important...

    The chassis is 35602083C

In 1974 there were no metallic colours, they were all solids, basically they were a Sahara Dust (beige), Bahama Gold, Davos White, Lincoln Green, Masai Red and Tuscan Blue

    From the 1974 brochure

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    G`day ,

the colour info i have is the same , there`s nothing on the vehicle to give the paint colour like later ones .

The info you have from the chassis is pretty much it , though as i said being sequencial yours is the 2083rd RHD export built and the count started at 00001 in 1970 .

Anything else of interest i have would only be differences between 73 and 4 , there weren`t many but being uted anything could have been altered on it .

    Hi,

I have a 74 2 door that now has an 81 body on it. The 74 body was white, but had been a pale blue underneath. 81 is red.

Unless it has had a complete body swap the inner front guards (engine bay) and firewall should still be in the original colour.

They were left black sometime late in the 80's.

Gauges on the dash should all be in the panel around the heater controls, not up near where the speaker should be.

The 81 body had indicator repeaters on the front guards, 74 did not.

    cheers, DL

Cheers for the info so far! I remember the firewall being a pale yellow/green and wings were black. Not sure if it still has the original body but the guards are at least early model with no indicators. There is no rust in the firewall but the sills are almost entirely gone. The auxiliary gauges are 2 on each side of the heater controls although they are all missing.

Well, at least another 2 door has been saved from the scrapyard. The guy I bought it from would have been taking it to the recyclers last weekend if I had not found it when I did.

In 1974 the doors, "A", "B" and "C" pillars should be in original body colour, if you lift off some of the trim panels, there should still be some evidence. The practice of painting the internal body shell black didn't start till the 80s.

IIRC 1974 was the first of the ADR27c emission control.

Finally got the 'as found' photos off the camera today. I also found out that it was last registered in WA 10 years ago as a utility, which could be a bonus come pits time!

Good on you for saving it! One day they won't be so easy to find.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
