    Diff assembly commonality

    Hi All,

Does anybody know which diff assemblies will fit my 1990 range rover.
Im looking at some from a 1983 model, will they fit?

    Thanks for any advice!

Do you mean the diff centre, or the whole axle? Diff centres are Rover 10-spline right up to 1993 or 1994. The axle assemblies have several changes with regard to metric/imperial, some mounting bolt sizes etc.

I agree with Oversite. I want to upgrade my 88 RRC to have a diff assembly from a newer RRC. Because i want 24 spline axles but more importantly i want the 4 pinion diff centre stronger it is stronger and a better design. Also makes it easier to upgrade to an LSD or locker diff centre.

AFAIK NO diffs in classic RR left the factory with 4 pinion centres, only factory fitted in rear of early P38a, and late THOR P38a had 4 pin front, too. P38a diffs are not interchangeable with RRC at all.

As far as rangerovers are concerned, The 24 spline only arrived in LATE hard dash (1994 build) and all softdash models to 1995.

All D2 diffs are 24 spline, and the centre will fit straight in. The front diffs on Defenders from 'MA' VIN are all 24 spline, and some 'LA' VIN(LATE 1993 ) build Defenders may have the 24 spline front.

Yes definately no 4 pinion centres.
24 splines were phased in on the 93year model, some have them (like mine) whilst others don't.

    D1 1998 axle assemblies

I just purchased front and rear diff assemblies disc to disc from Dungarover today removed from a 98 D1. I know this has 24 spline but does it not have 4 pinion centre? I'm not too concerned if it doesn't as i'm likely to upgrade the centre to an Ashcroft ATB but it would be handy to know.

Also Dungarover has plenty more axle assemblies if anyone else needs / wants one. Good bloke as well.

See above ^^, no 4 pin centres in anything except rear only of 1995 to 1998 P38a RR, and both front and rear 4 pin 1999 to 2001 P38a RR.
