Have you pulled the diff out yet? What size tyres do you run? I reckon your broken the spider gears and shaft which is common.
If you have the money you can install a arb air locker which will strength the centre but the next weakest point will be your axles.
Normal if you run stock tyres you shouldn't have to many diff problems.

Haven't pulled the diff out yet, can't decide whether to do it in the garage or to wait until I can get the car onto a hoist.

Running 31x10.5 tyres, so nothing too huge, though certainly a bit more rubber than standard.

I'm all for a using a few hundred bucks in the right place to save me money and time in the long run.

Will look into air lockers, but fear it may be a case of having to spend more than the car is worth?

Considering what I will do if I break another diff - what would a suitable upgrade path be?
Car is used recreationally every month of so for some intermediate off roading. 31x10.5 tyres and a pretty banged up body and paintwork.

Seeing as air lockers start around $1k, is this the best way to go (albeit expensive) or is there another way?

I put in a defender 110 rear diff. You will have to shorten the tail shaft. I run 33's and not scared to give it a bit and had no diff problems yet. You should get a rear diff around $750.

Started pulling out the rear axle today. Got most of the way through, but the propeller shaft bolts seem to be seized. Have soaked in WD40 and will be waiting to borrow a proper ring spanner that doesn't risk stripping the bolt.

    Axle is out!
Awaiting a 'new' axle to be sourced next weekend. Not sure what is in it, but coming off a RRC.

I just put in a Truetrac to avoid what happened to you. http://www.summitracing.com/dom/parts/dtl-910a400 It uses standard parts other than the side bearings, including the axles. It will spin if one wheel has no traction at all, but otherwise is excellent, and heaps cheaper than a full locker.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
