I found today, that after filling up the car with 95 RON (usually I just put 91 in) and giving it a good blast through the gears, the car began revving strong through the rev range with no stuttering.

As my mate has recently acquired a cheap disco 1 as his first 4wd, we thought we would take it for a test run with my rangie on the Mundaring powerlines.

It was a hot day 30+. The rangie did not take long to get pretty hot (3/4 of stock temp gauge) and began ****ing a little bit of coolant out the overflow.
The car occasionally stalled both on obstacles and 'normal' driving whilst it was hot, then refused to even try to tick over. Even putting a wire straight from the positive terminal of the battery to the starter motor - nothing would happen.

Would this be a starter issue, or an ignition issue? Either way, I would have to wait for the car to cool down a bit before it would turn over/start.

In regards to the cooling, the car has 2 electric radiator fans that are wired up to be 'always on' when the ignition is turned on. I think one is orientated to pull air through it, and the other is the other way round. Now I think about it, shouldn't both be pulling air through the radiator?
I had the radiator re-cored within a year or so ago, but with all the pulling apart and putting back together lately, the coolant is probably not at the right ratio (would be a bit weak). The thermostat is fairly new also.
Any ideas as to why it is getting so hot, and any suggestions as to how I could help reduce this problem? Almost considering putting air vents in the bonnet to help lower under bonnet temps.... The exposed exhaust headers could also be a problem.
Radiator fans running all the time won't fix a clogged up radiator. Whip the radiator out and get it rodded. I'd also whip the pump of an make sure the impeller is still ok. Your going to destroy the motor if you cook the **** out of it

Mines bog standard ... never gets hot, not even in very hot weather towing a caravan or car trailer. It's always sits just below a 1/4 of the very unreliable (IMO) temp gauge. Dunno what I'd do if it went higher than that... 'cso I reckon the temp gauges calibrations are no good. 1/4 gauge is obviously normal operating temp ... ie: about 85degrees. So how hot is it if it reaches the mid point on the gauge ? Certainly it's not normal... possibly it's overheating .. dunno

Whip the starter out and have a look at it. The brushes are probably just worn out. Giving it a solid whack with something will often bring the brushes back in contact with the commutator and it'll start working again for a very short time.

The radiator did get rodded a while back - that's what I meant about getting it re-cored. How often should this be done?

I pulled the water pump off a while back, but didn't end up replacing it as it seemed ok. It may be a bit weak now I'm guessing!

    Thought I'd post an update.

Have 2 RRCs at home still. The 84 and the 89.
89 is in the shed getting a rebuild as per other thread.
84 is in the driveway, have just been using it as a runabout and a cheap offroad adventurer.

84 has been running fine when it's cold. No issues. It's rugged nature and appearance make it quite the beast off road - just takes everything I throw at it. It is also very satisfying to drive!

Randomly lost my clutch the other day when backing it out the driveway.
Turns out the clutch line had broken (it was tied to the exhaust??!), so have to wait until a braided one I have on order arrives. I'm glad it's an easy fix, it is not a good feeling having 2 'broken' range rovers!

Whilst under the car, I also found a broken gbox mount, and figured I need to get/make up some sort of heat shielding for the starter motor to keep it working when off road. The extractors must really give off a lot more heat than the standard exhaust headers.

Depending on the success or failure of the 89 project, I may be looking into a 2 door project also. I find the manual & carby combo so simple and satisfying.
My cousin is doing a ground-up 2 door restoration, so I may be tempted to follow in his footsteps. The old man has a couple sitting around collecting dust that would be a good starting point.

Nothing better than getting together with a few like-minded individuals and working on cars in the shed or taking them on an adventure out on the tracks.

Ordered the new clutch hose (NRC2211) on the 29/7 from Rimmer Bros - as they were the only mob I could find that sold the braided version.

    Still haven't received it.

Contacted them a couple of days ago to find out what was going on, and they will be doing a 'carrier claim' and get the part re-sent.
So who knows how long it will be before I actually receive the hose! Meanwhile, my rangie is stuck in the driveway, immobile.

Considering ordering a standard hose elsewhere to come quickly just to get the car moving again. Pretty disappointed though, will likely become the first and last time I buy something from Rimmer Bros.

Ordered a new standard hose from lr direct, with a new water pump. Shipping was almost the same price as the rimmer bro order, but it's express air freight!!! Might have it by the end of the week. Will see which comes first!

All this for a clutch line .... Mate ... pirtek... take the damaged one in there and they'll fit the ends to a new hose while you wait for very few $$$$
