    350sbc or 300tdi into 1994 rrc softdash

    Hi everyone,

My head is going crazy, I have two engines sitting at home on stands. A 350sbc long motor out of a 95 Chev suburban. and also a 300tdi that I removed out of a 95 disco.

My classic is currently an auto 3.9v8 petrol/gas on 33" tires, so fuel consumption is atrocious! It uses about 32lts per 100klm on petrol and anywhere between 180 to 250klm on 67lt of gas combined freeway/city.

I am currently converting it to manual, this should drop my fuel usage to about 30lts per 100lts.

I mainly use the car for fishing and shooting and camping so fuel economy around the 15lts per 100lts is what I want. But I also want to be able the overtake on the freeway.

If I go sbc it will be a stroked to a 383, with a towing cam running on gas injection/petrol, and if I go 300tdi it will have a vnt turbo and a turner engineering ported head also running lpg injection.

I don't know what to do. I want fuel economy but I want power as well.

    help me please!!!!!

    cheers Goran

    Hi,
In your fuel calculations did you take into account the larger tire size? Your consumption may not be as bad as you think.

Put in the 300tdi. Factory fit so all parts to do it will be on the shelf. Although they were never sold in Aus very popular in the UK.

I thought about putting 4bd1t Isuzu diesel in, but trying to engineer it in a 94 classic is going to be hard since they only came out in Australia until 1992!
I rang up Isuzu Australia for that information.

Then I thought about the 300tdi, but everyone keeps on going on about how slow and gutless they are. The might be a factory fit but I still have to cutoff the engine mounts and weld new one in. But fuel economy is really good on them even with 33" tyres.

Then I thought about putting in my chev engine, heaps of grunt, alot better fuel economy than the 3.9 rover v8, dont need to cut engine mounts off can buy the conversion kit from marks adapter.

Funny about that, I have the same year car, and was using the same engineer, and he said it was all ok. My problem is that the email I had sent him about this was on my laptop and the hard drive crashed, so I now have no proof, bloody computers

When I spoke to the engineer, hey basically said your car is a 94mdl so you can only put in and engine from that same year or newer. So I thought ok I will ring up another engineer an he said the same! So then I called up all the approved vic roads registered automotive engineers in Victoria and they all said the same thing.
So that's my story Vern! I was very disappointed! But hey **** happens!

Hey Vern, how did you go with you soft dash handle?

The 300 TDI is no slower than an Isuzu , but a hell of a lot quieter

    I had a 300tdi classic. Lovely drive

RRC are a car to be enjoyed at a nice pace and not really a rally car anyway. Goes better with a manual rather than an auto ,but there again what doesn't

Will do 150kph if you need and will return 10l per 100k's how much more do you want.

Oil pump problems on early engines , ECU , oil in harness , worst fuel economy than 300 TDI just a few reason not to transplant a TD5 into a RRC.
