ign system prblem
Some electrical clues to pursue.
the small module on the side of the dissy is the ignition module
sound like yours is a later ignition there the disconnected orginal one.
check the cleanliness and firmness of the two spades inside the plug top
also check the trigger wires comming from the pickup coil inside the dissy under the plastic protector that the ignition mudule plugs into
because it is an intermittent fault you will need to look closely for corrosion and the like
at the same time check around the dissy cap for signs of cracks and or carbon deposits
the rotor button is also a problem area but usally gives rough running and backfiring none of which you have
the coil should have + 12 on one side with ign on but not running
the other side will go to dissy via a round plug that should also be checked for dirty of corroded connections the two wires going to dissy ign module one is from the coil neg side and the other goes to the ecu under the seat
another problem area has been the bulk head electrical connection just as the engine harness entres the cabin from engine bay,it has been known to have high resistance connections causing intermittent faults
if your water temp sensor faults (usally open circuit) it will make the engine run very rich so you will smell fumes.
you can test the sensor by putting a low ohms resistor say 10 ohms between the two spade sockets or by simply joining the wires togerther but it will run very lean
the other problem with the early injected engines is the fuel pump electrical connections inside the epoxy on the top of fuel pump
hope this helps

Ended up making a hard decision. Just sold the Rangey today after doing some of Roverrob's tests and it passed.. just had me stumped, frustrated, and I was borrowing a friends car, and he wanted it back.. so I needed the cash to buy myself a cheap camry to run about in.

Thanks for the help, guys.
