    93 lse rangy

gday all., i had a small problem today on the way too work. i was taking off at the lights and there was a very slight hesitation when taking off . on the way home it did it again at 1oo klms an hour, i pushed the accelerator pedal down a bit more (110klm), and it had a slight stutter. i don't flog the ring out of it, and its been so reliable since i bought it. i checked leads this afternoon and everything is tight and fine. any ideas? i will change fuel filter in the morning and check wiring etc. hope its ok..... fingers crossed!!!!! . cheers for any info ladies and gents.

Possibly a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) fault. If you have access to a computer that can read the faults, you may be able to clear it, that is until it happens again. Its located on the plenum just near air intake. There are a few threads regarding replacing them, new ones are quite expensive if bought locally and even new ones are prone to be faulty, maybe genuine are better.

Oh dear, this is an Obvious and possibly terminal fault, you need to immediately send the vehicle down here to me. I'll pay freight costs, just remember to leave the rego papers, disposal section signed by you and my name in the 'new owner' section and it will be all OK again!

Seriously, I would do as suggested and check wiring to the TPS etc.

Have you ever put injector cleaner in the tank?

This is how my problem started, hesitation here and there then the inability to maintain speed at 100kmh. Then I couldn't start it, I double dosed it with injector cleaner and have used it every couple of tanks since and she runs great.

It might not be the problem, but for about $5-10 it is a cheap first step.

Eliminate the "obviously NOT"... Very useful proceedure which saves face later on when the cause turns out to be the stuff you did'nt look at.
    You could start with:-
Disconnect and suck on the Vacuum advance hose, to see if the diaphragm is leaking or not. - Can start with a pinhole... which sadly, never seems to get smaller or seal...Anyway, 1993 is getting a bit old. My '95 died last year.
-Then check battery terminals, coolant level and put some distilled water in the washer bottle, - just to on the safe side!

Betcha the Cruise Control hoses are knackered too... Cracks in the side, and hardening/loosening around the nipples where they fit the vacuum motor etc. - Suspect anything near the back of the engine.... it gets incredibly hot in there!.

Indeed all rubber has a shorter life in a RR engine-room than what you're used to in Jap cars.

The hose that goes to your foot-brake switch might also be a bit iffy too, as may be the switch. (Mine was out of adjustment, now it will trigger if a fly lands on it....just how I want it.)
In case you're new to CC, this switch talks to the CC ECU, as well as opening up the vacuum line, thus filling it and turning 'off' the throttle-butterfly motor.
The RAVE fault-finding proceedure works as long as you follow it exactly.
I reckon the Cruise Control is well worth fixing properly, as it's as good as my late Toyota Crown (the epitome of 'smoooth') and better than many modern cars I've driven. At least Herr Bosch got it right.

gday again, i checked all vac hoses this morning and down on the front left hand corner, in left batt compartment, a hose was cracked as it turned 90 degrees into a soft rubber mounted thingy!!! . i cut it back a little and put that back on. i then checked along the length of the rest of the hoses and saw slight worn cracking along near the t- piece. everything else looked fine. i drove up to repco and bought some injector cleaner and mac cleaner. ( my friend at work used some on his commodore, and said it made quite a bit of difference to fuel economy and smoother running. i will buy an air filter from mike halls this week and clean maf along with filter change. driving back from shops it ran fine, so i suppose "see what happens" next week. sunroof works very well , it has just had a genuine seal put on at chrismas . my father got it from a dealership in liverpool england for 33 pounds,(happy with that). the last time i used the cruise control, it surged pretty wildly and the pedal was moving up and down with the surging, i thought there was a ghost in the car!!! s #%t myself. also another thing that happened the other day, the rear view mirror went all purple(night glare i think) but the top quarter is normal and bottom is purple. is it wise to just buy a new one or can it be repaired? i always put windshield foil protector on at work, (top of dash slightly warped from previous owner) too try and stop more damage too interior.maybe heat could be a factor? and i leave the windows down too release heat also. you are not wrong about heat in the engine bay, i burnt my hand yesterday afternoon on exhaust manifold trying too check all plug leads were on. ha ha ha should have known better!!! cheers for all your help fellas.

Independant dealer over here gave me the cheerful news re the auto-dimming mirror. Expensive to replace/repair (?) and prone to occasionally leaking the magic liquid. Bad news is, said fluid makes a mess of your dash (plastic) so you end up with two problems.
Personally, I reckon they're not dark enough, and the 'prismatic' style works much better, IMHO.
