Gutless wonder

Sorry for the delay SES training blew my evening. Anyway, I went to pick it up from mechanics and it wouldn't turn over. Apparently the starter motor has pooped itself, without warning. Quote $600 if I want it right away, $400 (all plus labour 1hr) if I care to wait 4 working days. Solenoid only is $200 but they say the starter has only a couple more starts left so its a time bomb in effect. Now, I'm a professional pest controller, and I smell a rat! Either that or I am the unluckiest dude in Canberra (except Julia) I can get a starter from Rover parts for $200 Problem is the car is at the garage now with the old motor out so I have little choice.

Its a push rod v8 so you only have one camshaft so I fail to see how "atleast one" is worn out.
Low compression on one cylinder is another matter but if I were you start simple (Spark Plugs/Dizzy) and see how you go from there.

Thanks for the info.I love this forum. Yes, he did say THE camshaft, not sure where my head was thinking there were two! I am going to get second opinions on everything before doing anything, not that any of it is urgent. They have replaced the plugs with hotter ones to help with the gunging problem, funny thing is it doesn't smoke at all, which I would expect if it were burning oil. The oil use doesn't seem overly excessive either, not for an old V8!

I smell a rat too - I might be critical of Canberra Motor Works in Mitchell in some aspects but one area they are top notch on are parts - very competitive on new parts with many in stock and if not - overnight delivery. Ray also has a good spare parts bin and depending what he is doing at the time is free with information and advice.

In reality the starters are pretty robust - the solenoid can play up as do the internal clutch mechanism in the starter but both parts are available - the motor itself rarely fails - maybe some brushes from time to time.

I would be looking at taking your RR somewhere else.

Got her back unexpectedly this arvo. $550 bucks later. I have the old one and can easily check it out myself, but $550 is STEEP! I can get one anywhere for $200 Regardless, the money is now spent and the car is running better than it was but not outstanding.. i just want to load up my swag and go fish!
