    faulty new sealed beam headlamps

So, took my RRC back to the government vehicle testing station for a retest today. Among other things it previously failed on a faulty headlamp and a headlamp alignment problem. All fair enough. I replaced the faulty one with a brand new one purchased on-line from an Aussie 4x4 ebay store. Today the inspectors informed me that they were failing the lights as they were quote: just a mass of light, not projecting properly" I argued that one at least was brand new, and as a sealed beam had no adjustment beyond aiming (not the cause of the fail) I was told to "take it back then". I was not a happy chappy but you cant argue with these people, they are a law unto their own it seams. BTW the lights seemed fine when I drove it! I have now purchased a halogen upgrade kit, but would be keen to know if anyone else has encountered such an issue?

Unless the mirror is dull, they're ****ing idiots. They always had crappy headlamps, even our D2 the lights don't really 'point' anywhere except ahead; and are nothing like the HID directional ones on modern cars (you know the ones on that Mazda 3 driven by a young bimbo that blind you like high beams when she goes over the speed bump you're approaching!!).

    Take it somewhere else.

    Cheers Will

Why not just buy a set of brand name sealed beams at Supercheap, Repco or Ashtons or whatever - I think they are about $20 and put the lights you would really like in later when it is on the road.

Those people are a law under themselves and it is easiest to just do what they want. I am surprised they even explained what the issue with the lights was - normally it would be lights fail sort out what the issue is yourself - no further information.

Keep slugging on - at least when it does finally pass you will not have to worry about it again.

Though I think you were hard done by with your initial tester referring the matter to Dickson.

If OEM is not faulty they can't fail you AFAIK, find the part number and show them that they match.

You can buy after market lights that for the same hole, but I imagine these would be just as bad!

There is no point - they will not listen and you really have no recourse. They test the lights if in their opinion they fail then they fail.

I have had dealing with these people where they incorrectly defected my car in their carpark while I was there on admnin matters. Also I had a car fail because it was too low - it wasn't and I had the documentation with me to show the ride height was correct and queried as that was the manufacturers ride how were the vehicles able to be registered in Aust - didn't matter was simpler to jack the car up and get it passed and bring it back to standard later.

It was a bit easier when all cars had to go there for annual checks as they were overworked and struggled to get through the vehicles (my old series 3 passed first go even with its crappy brakes on the test rollers). Now they only check defected vehicles and "special" vehicles that have been referred there so they have too much time on their hands.

Yeah mate, honestly I believe its getting out of hand. I ain't no hoon I'm a 50yr old tradie trying to get a vehicle passed to go camping. I am hearing so many of these stories now that I am thinking that it needs to be addressed. How? Damned if I know.
