More info please... - Like, 'which' engine?
- Almost ANY, non-LR engine gets my vote, just on principle, even petrol ones...
Would this be a stupid idea?
Those engines are really compact and powerful...

Well i'll find out. I'm not sure of the model of truck but it was either a hino or isuzu
I was helping a mate this arvy with checking his late model light truck front wheel bearings. The cab was tilted over.
I noticed it had this big/wide four cyl turbo engine in it.
Looked really neat and tidy with not much crap hanging off it with heaps of torque and power.
I just thought yeah that would be a pretty good sitting in the front of my '83 Classic haha
Yep, with *heaps of torque* ... goodby gearbox/transfer/diffs/axles/CV joints, eventually...
If you want a good 4 litre truck engine with heaps of torque, smooth and not too heavy a thirst (compared to the v8's) and quiet.... just buy yourself a GU Patrol,,,
(Battens down the hatches...)
Jeza, have a search through the Isuzu section, much easier![]()
a 4BD1(T) Isuzu is good, and the 4 speed was used behind that engine in 110's.
sounds like
range rover with 3.9 isuzu and an lt95 to me (or lt85wlt230)

If you've benefited from one or more of my posts please remember, your taxes paid for my skill sets, I'm just trying to make sure you get your monies worth.
If you think you're in front on the deal, pay it forwards.
You'll be breaking new ground with this one.
But if you want to drop to 3.9 litres, you'll find plenty of info.![]()
It will be a Hino Dutro engine 4.0L Turbo Intercooled (with the Toyota Vac Pump Alternator) coupled to HJ45 Gearbox, Transfer Case and diffs. With disc brake conversion...
You'll see it in 15 years time haha
If you want to drive a 40 series with a hino. Go buy a 40 series and throw it in. It could even be an easy swap and will be worth something when you're done.
Don't put part time 4wd into a rangie. Especially not with a toyota 4 speed. It's just wrong and will make your vehicle instantly worth nothing.
