Urgent help request PLEASE - Electrics - Brake Lights and Indicators

    Hi all,

I have an '88 Classic, and last night I lost the indicators and brake lights, and instead, I now have the seat belt light illuminate on the dash when either the indicators or brakes are applied. The seatbelt light does not flash, it stays illuminated when either are applied.

When I switch the indicators on with the stalk, the seat belt light illuminates, and I can hear a click from what sounds like it's coming from down in the panel in the footwell (not the side panel, but up where the steering shaft is).

    Can anybody help please??

Thanks in advance for any input or assistance.

    G'day Brenno,

I had something a little similar. Open the door and head lights came on, hit the brake and the indicator came on, interior light stayed on....all very random stuff.

I ended up following the wiring and found some rats had eaten through the wires up behind the ac unit. Replaced wires and haven't had a problem since.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

    Devo

Sounds like an earth leak issue to me. Not sure where it is. Rather than worry about the seat belt light. I'd try find the fault as if the seat belt light was not coming on. Fix that and there is a chance the seat belt light will turn off.

Or you could try it the other way and disconnect the switch for the seat belt light all together and see if that makes your indicators and brakes work.

Check the trailer light plug before doing anything. Make sure it is clean and free of anything. Front, back and inside. Sometimes it is the simple things that catch us out.

    Good luck.

Yeah, not worried about the seat belt light. I only mentioned it as it was strange that it was illuminating when brakes were applied or indicators activated. I don't have any wires going to the seat anyway, so I don't know why it would illuminate. As I said, not concerned about it, just want my brake lights and indicator lights working again.

Trailer light plug is fine, no contamination, and all connectors are fine.

I'll see if I can find any earth issues, but not being electrically minded, I'm flying blind.

I've changed out the flasher unit for a new one, and that didn't help. The flasher unit is where the clicking is coming from... Audible click, and I can feel it when I touch the flasher unit.

The hazard lights work fine also.

I'd be inclined to think a fuse is corroded enough to allow some current but not enough to operate. Clean the fuse holders and replace the fuses.

Also I'd look at the ignition switch. Testing my old RRC the indicators go off during cranking so the indicators supply isn't the same as the ignition. I suggest you access the multiplug to the ignition switch and connect a temporary bridge from the battery feed (plain brown wire) to all the others in turn to see if the ignition switch isn't feeding one circuit, which is probably the accessories circuit. You can run a temporary switch or hook the accessories to the ignition wire instead until you get another ignition switch.

    All fixed, thanks guys.

Found a wire with some damage (of course, it was in a ***** of a spot), so I replaced that section, and cleaned the fuse at the same time. Either or both of these have them all working again.

RRC are notorious for this kind of failure. They have a terrible electronics system. I've had to repair/replace the ignition loom on both of my RRC's. I've also had to remove the dash on them both to repair damaged wiring behind the heater module. So now I've separated the circuits and fused the **** our of them.

Out of curiosity what colour was the wire you replaced? Was it white?
