Thread: Stuck clutch

The clutch driven plate has stuck to the flywheel.

I am not a good authority on how to fix it as I once did the layshaft in a Cortina GT unsticking.

BUt AFAIK the way to unstick is to put it in first, start it with your foot on the clutch, then jam on the brakes and handbrake when it starts to move.

This should unstick the clutch, and on an LT95 do no damage, but there is always the possibility.

PhilipA's suggestion would be mine too, but if you want a less aggressive method or are limited by space/garage constraints from starting it in gear, you might find that rocking it with the engine not running (4th selected and foot on clutch) might be enough. Obviously needs a second person so one can rock and the other clutch.

Out of curiosity once it is freed up, would you then slip the clutch a bit to clear anything. Or is it more to do with the clutch disengaging mechanism it self needing to be freed up?

i have an XY Falcon that only gets moved once a year maybe and when its plate sticks i jack up one rear wheel start it in gear and use the momentum of the wheel . Blip the throttle , jab the brakes run the revs up , if 1st doesn`t do it 2nd usually will but have used 3rd when it`s warm the starter won`t get 4th but it does shock everything .

The wheels don`t need to be far off the ground and it need to be done with care , use slow speed to start and watch if it bounces at all don`t do it . Be aware that it can fall from whatever raises it and if the plate doesn`t free it will go forward .

No it is the clutch driven plate. If the clutch pedal feels normal then the pressure plate is lifting IE the mechanism is probably OK.


If you drive normally it should be OK, but try a few hill starts maybe. It may judder for a while. In any case sticking usually means a bit of oil is making its way onto the plate. This could mean the front seal in the gearbox is leaking, which usually finds its way out of the drain thoughtfully provided by LR but a little could go onto the plate.

Surely it can't be an oil leak causing the problem it's a land rover remember

Let it run for 20-30 minutes to get the Engine/Gearbox up to operating temp and dry everything out. Change in temp of the different individual components (different materials expand/contract at different rates) may be enough to free the clutch plate. Try PhilipA's suggestion. If not, let it cool down and contract and try again. Make sure there is oil/coolant in there first !
