    That looks to be an LT230 transfer case lever as it goes sideways and forward and back. This is the original TC for the 1988 RRC. I also have one.

    As for the lever not moving try moving the car to a slight hill. Put the AUTO gear selector in NEUTRAL. Let the car roll slowly with your foot on the brake a little. While the car is rolling push the transfer case lever forward, it should move into the neutral position of the transfer case, push it forward again and you will have low range.

    I DO NOT SUGGEST DOING THIS WITH THE AUTO IN DRIVE! Yes it helps to have the gears moving to make a section but not under ANY kind of force. It should NOT grind if you do it as described above.

    On the top of the transfer box is a ball detent.

    If you don't use them often they'll sieze up. You may need to spray some wd40 on there (a bugger of a place to get at).

    You can also reset the preload of the ball detend if you wish.

    With a bit of practice you can change between the ranges at anything up to 60kph. Just match the revs.
